284 winchester 150 ABLR

I started this project with the hopes of hitting 3100 fps with the 150 ABLR. I chose IMR 4350 because it's on the faster side of H4350 and R17. It's an awesome powder for the 284 platform because it handles all bullets from 120-180gr. I started off with 53.5 gr and went up to 56 gr. with a case overall length of 2.956" which is accurate mag length.

53.5 = 3050
54.0 = 3100
55.0 = 3200
55.5 = 3225
56.0 = 3257 Hot! Stiff bolt handle and not much velocity gain to justify pressure.

I was tickled as a pig in shit when I first read the chrono. My suspicion got the better of me so I checked the chrono in between 5 shot firings against my GAP 308. The velocities I've proven stayed true with the .308. I'm considering trading a friend for his stock savage dbm setup so I can get 3.00" instead of being limited to 2.956".

I was wondering why no one has bothered with IMR 4350 in their 284. I believe it's a very good powder for most combinations. I'm running a blueprinted savage short action with accurate mag bottom metal and dbm, krieger 9 twist @ 28" with brake, manners t3 stock, nightforce 20 moa base, warne rings, and bushnell 6500 6-24x50 ffp g2dmr.

If the bc holds up on these bullets I believe I'll have stumbled onto something very special, and apparently something that hasn't been toyed with much. What's y'alls thoughts?

Here's a couple pics of the chrono reading after 55gr and the rifle. The 54gr charge was the most accurate at 1/4" at 100 and the worst was a tie between the 55.5 and 56 at 3/4". It's still a new barrel so I hope the accuracy will stay with the 54.5 ish loads. If I can stay at 3150 or 3100 ish I'll be happy.

Looks like Nosler is really going after the long range hunting market. I just read about their 26 Nosler cartridge which is a 6.5mm barrel burner. Now I find out they have a whole line of Accubond LR bullets with advertised high BC's. Just looking at their lineup on their site, I notice their 270 bullet with BC of 0.625! That should make some 270 Win owners very happy.

Nosler is probably charging a mint for these pills though.

Gunny, looks like you've got a great combo, especially for long range hunting, a high BC bonded boat tail should be perfect. Time will tell on the advertised BC numbers. Very intriguing though.

I heard the BC numbers on the bullets are way overinflated. I read that someplace.

It's mostly from haters. Lol. Litz won't even answer an email about them. I'm starting to think his ties to berger and people's brand allegiance is what's driving that hype. They're usually the naysayers that say reliable top speeds with this bullet were impossible. I guess everyone's an expert now cause they're on a forum. ;D

I'm taking it to 1000 this weekend at 3100. If It doesn't do it in 6.7 mils from a 100 yard zero, then we'll know.

No I believe I read it on longrangehunting by a guy that tested them. It had nothing to do with Berger. He tested a bunch of different ones and they were off by different amounts. There is another thread on there with problems of the bullets and it has 51 pages of responses.

Gunny81 How far off the rifling are you seating these ABLR bullets? I have a few .308 190 grs. to test and need to have a general idea how they shoot most accurately.
Let us know what you learn at the match.
I have measured the 190's and, compared with the Berger 210 VLD, they have a longer, more angled boattail, a shorter bearing surface, and close to the same overall length.
I have been unable to find members who have loading experience with them who are willing to share their data.
Thanks
Bill
