284 Winchester 1000 yard load testing

I have been playing with loads at 100 yards and decided to take the loads that did good at 100 yards out to 1000. I am still not happy with ES. I have carefully prepped brass(expand, trim, neck turn, size, fire form, clean, anneal, resize and trim), dropped powder and seated bullets as consistently as I can.

If any of you have any suggestions or anything else I can try to get better please fire away.

Here is a pic of my last 100 yard load testing and some testing done at 1000 yards.

1000 yards Data:
Group 1 (53.3g):

Yeah 53.3 looks like just about a 3" group. There is not much vertical in the group so I think you are in good shape.

I know guys who get jump up and down happy if the put all their shots on the target, (anywhere on the target) at 1K. Your group 1 (53.3 ) looks to me to be all you need for something to fine tune into the X ring. The accuracy of that load at 1K would be an early Christmas gift for me.?
So jump up and down a little - and go home with a smile .......... ;)

+1 on 40X
If you insist on critisism (is that a word?) I would ask if that clicky uppy-downy thing on top of your scope is broke? Almost all of your groups are low even at 100 (I do that too). About 1/2 a minute up and you'll knock the X off that target!! No Charge.

Question:

I saw your earlier posts and was wondering why you abandoned the load that was making 2910 fps.

I agree that 53.3 is smoking good.

He was testing for accuracy so the POI is irrelevant.

Busdriver, do you have a link or specific charge weight that was used to get 2910?( I have posted a few targets and hard to recall exact one)
I am pretty sure it was with fed 210 primers and I switched primers in hopes of lowering my ES. With the Tula primers above 54.8 I begin to see pressure and at 1000 it did not do great.

As for shooting a tad low, Erik nailed it! I set the scope a little low so I do not shoot out my point of aim. That X is a good aiming point and no need to destroy it in testing!

H4831SC and Tula primers.
The 53.3 load is GREAT!

The Tula primers are the source of your larger than desired ES and SD. Been there, done that.

Switch to any CCI or Federal, match grade preferred. Find the same velocity and accuracy with lower ES/SD.

Yes, it was 55.1 or 55.2 depending 10/13 or 10/14 targets. You were using the FED210 primer and getting reasonable ES's at that velocity (~15 fps). Groups looked good too.

On the subject of ES, I don't understand how it is possible at 1k yards to have groups as small as that 53.3 one with an ES of 23. I realize that barrel harmonics have something to do with it, but the 100 yard target would have been a mess in that case...

A 23 fps ES should have given you a 5.5 inch high group... It looks to be less than half of that. Is there a chance that the chrono is giving greater than actual ES readings? My Magnetospeed has had me wondering in the past.

Just a thought.

I will look at those targets again! I believe that with fed210 I may have settled for 54.8. I did experience an increase in velocities after about 350 rds down the barrel and I had to adjust a tad.

This ES has me puzzled! I see people posting with single digits and that is where I would like to be but not sure what step in the reload or prep process I am missing. Although I did get single digits in the 2925-2950 range but primer pockets suffered.

The 53.3 load had a 2" vertical and the 54.2 measured 5"x5". I have a match in a few days and I'm gonna run with 53.3!

I would see how consistent that load shoots. I agree with the previous comments, to shoot that small at 1k, es will need to be lower. That may have been a fluke group. Either way I'd say your close.

Gonna run a few more at 53.3 and 54.2 to see if it repeats. both looked good at 100 and 1000 so hopefully the third firing will show the same.

To remove doubt, I shoot 2 groups of 5 when I load test and do it in 1/10th so I find the center of the node the first time. Then I jump test.

Gotta ask some of you more experienced competition guys why this caliber is not seen much in the equipment lists of the benchrest results. It would seem to be very competitive.

Less recoil is a advantage when group shooting so not to upset the tracking of the rifle. I have shot some bench and I prefer a 6mm for that reason, especially with the light gun. I run it @ 22lb for fclass and it behaves better. The course of fire is very different.
