284 win ?

I'm interested in doing a standard 284 win chamber in a sporting rifle, useing top shelf componets.
is there a standard 284 chamber throat-ed for 168 Berger's. or even throat-ed for the 168's and 180's ?

Is there a standard chamber that will work with win brass, 6.5/284 lapua and Norma brass ?
what would be a good neck dia to use that would work with most brass ?

How hard is it to neck up a lapua 6.5/284 case to standard 284 win.. ?

the reason i ask this is because i would mainly use the lapua cases.. but wondering if the chamber would be able to fire a factory 284 win shell?

what about die's ? sorry..I have no experience with the 284 and was wondering if there is a middle ground that could be used.

Make sure the person who is chambering the barrel knows your going to use Lapua 6.5x284 brass necked up to 284 (7mm). I "think" the Lapua are .001 larger than the Win brass, I do understand there is a difference between the two.

I use both Lapua and Winchester brass with no problems.

I use a Sinclair neck expander to neck up my Lapua brass, it's the best. Just lube the necks pretty good, and I rotate the brass 180deg's and run the expander through the brass necks twice.

I mainly use 180's which requires a long throat on a 284. I sent in two dummy rounds loaded with 180 vld's when I chambered my barrel. From just looking at things, I don't think any smaller bullet would stay in the neck, if your trying to stay close to the lands after throating for the 180's.

Redding 284 die set, FL with neck bushing is what I use. Plus Competition Seater.
Redding part number for the complete set: Mfr Part: 58141 . . . fine set . . . . I just bought the FL bushing sizer die and the competition seater die, about 1/2 the money.

I hope I answered some of your questions, Dennis

There are a lot of 284 shooters here, plus several good articles on the 284.

You also need to decide whether or not you are going to single feed only or if you are going to feed from a mag. If you are going to mag feed then your OAL is significantly limited in a short action, esp with the bullets you mentioned. If you are going to single feed or build in a long action then you can load them out a lot longer long and get more case capacity.

Thanks for the info dennis..
dennis what is your neck dia ?
dennis do i understand you use both win and the lapua brass ?

I know dave kiff is the guy to talk to but i thought there would be some shooters who have a 284 and have either done what i'm asking or know what i'm asking.. just trying to decide if i can do this or have to compromise.
I know the 168 has good BC and is a proven accurate bullet...it would be good enough for what i'm doing.

will the 180 vld's feed out of a short action with a wyatt lenght box?.. is the wyatt box 2.9" long

FJIM, I shoot with a Savage Target Action, Single Shot.

I can use both Lapua and Win Brass.

The 284 brass loaded up with a 180 VLD is pretty long.

I will have to get in my reloading room to give exact measurements.

I should have concentrated on the above statement a little harder, info I am given you is based on my F Class rifle which is a totally different ballgame.

Hopefully someone with a sporter rifle will help us out.
