284 win. & Reloader 17

I have some Reloader 17 and some Sierra 150 grain bullets which I wish to load together. I was wondering if anyone has a load for it as where to start . Thanks

It appears that either this combination is not as common place as you might suspect or maybe the members need a little more information before committing their data to the public.

There are two Sierra bullets available in this 150 grain weight class; MatchKing #1915 and the SPBT #1913. There is about 0.050" difference in length which will have some impact on the load.

Barrel length because longer/shorter barrels affect the end result of the velocity.

Cartridge overall length.

This may help you. I use 17 with 160gr AB.

I shoot the same set up using the 162 with a short action 25" barreled 284. I also use the RL17. Close to his load at 53.5 grains gets me 3000 or just over. I set the rifle up for 160-168s. COAL is 2.975-2.980 allows feeding from accurate mags and bottom metal set up. Accuracy is superb and despite the reputation people have given the RL17 for throat wear, mine is about equal to my 284 LA when running H4831sc at the same round count. The RL17 I think is ideal for the heavier .284 bullets. I don't think it'll shine using the 150s any more than if using H4350.

Rl26 or 23 are ideal and deliver the power, 180 to 195gr.

7828ssc and 162gr is great for practice/ fodder. Load to 2850 or 2920 depending on barrel length. Temp sensitive and no good for long strings, but very accurate.

I have used RL 17 with Barnes 145 gr. LRX bullets. My load was 53.5 gr and 3.05 COAL in a Remington 700 long action to get 3100 plus FPS out of a 28" barrel.

I get the highest velocities with the 162 A-Max in .284 Win with a 22" barrel. It may be too fast for the heaviest bullets, but it certainly works well with the mid-range.

Works phenomenally well with the heaviest 7mm bullets. Not sure about with a 22" barrel tho. In my 30" barrel and long action rifle, I'm getting 3000 with 180s.
