284 win custom build

So, I recently shot a friends custom 6.5-284 and was more than impressed. After studying 6.5 vs. 7mm bullet ballistics, I'd like to build a custom 284 Win hunting/target repeater rifle weighing around 10 lbs all in. One thing I liked about the 6.5-284 was the +/- 3.20 COAL vs. 2.90 for the straight 284. I'd like to build the 284 to the 3.20 COAL as I think this will go a long way towards eliminating the compressed load issues common to the cartridge with heavier/longer bullets. I am having a tough time finding any load data for this 284 3.20 COAL set up. Can anyone help?

Also, I know I'll need a long action with bottom metal and magazines to match for this COAL. Anything else?

Thanks!

I was in the same boat last year around this time. I spun up a 284 on a savage long action. I based my loads off of the competition loads found on this site. You'll find that the 1000yd f-class shooters with the 284 single load, and with that are able to seat at the 3.2" or in that vicinity. I don't have my loads on hand but can tell you iwas running what would be way over book under a 180 berger target vld and had no pressure issues what so ever. That 3.2 will get you comfortably into any long action mag. You should have H4831sc loads in the 54-55gr range with 180's seated out, maybe higher once you work up. goo luck, post pictures when you can.

Yes, 280AI is also a great hunting/target round. Easy to build off a standard bolt face long action, gives a bit more velocity than the 284win due to a bit of extra powder capacity, and shoots the same high BC 7mm projectiles.

The 284win is the king of the hill for pure accuracy in F-Class with a long 30" barrel. If you're building a smaller hunting gun with a shorter barrel the added capacity of the 280AI might be beneficial to keep velocity up.

I'm at 60g of H1000, 3.485" OAL 180 Berger Hybrid (magazine fed) with my 280AI and in the mid 2800's for velocity with a 25.5" barrel. That's a somewhat conservative load and I could potentially push up into the 2900's if I wanted to beat up on the brass.

If its the 284 you like and want the same powder charge as an AI 280, simply rechamber to a shehane in a 284. Will give the same powder cap as 280AI but better accuracy.

My .284 Shehane hunting rifle loaded with the 195gr. Bergers measures 3.30" OAL. Fits perfectly into a long action magazine box and feeds nicely. I run the 180gr. hybrids a little shorter. 55.0gr. of H4831SC mmoves the 195 at 2715 fps. Nothing has needed a second shot this year; (2) 400# Russian boars, 300# whitetail, 6x6 elk, aoudad and a hybrid ram.

Not sure what bullet weight you're looking for but I'm running 168gr. Berger VLD's in my .284,

OAL: 3.165
53gr. H4350
28" barrel 1/9t
2900 fps

It has been my one of the greatest guns I've ever done. The ballistics are great and accuracy is very good under .5 MOA mainly around .3 MOA

You won't be disappointed with the 284. Lots of info here. Mine is unreal. But we'll over 10lbs. The 284 needs a longer barrel to make speed u will want. Mine is a krieger hv @ 29 , so obviously on the heavy side, but worth every ounce when your shooting softballs at 1k
