284 Win Brass

Well Im working on a 284 chamber and I need some info. I have just measured some "brand new" winchester brass. This is from a new bag and is unfired. Measuring the web area I see that it is typical Winchester. It measures .493, lets say its a tad small.

Can anyone tell me what "brand new" unfired Lapua brass (.284 win) measures in this area? Im measuring about .300 up from the head. Im hoping it measures closer to the .500 SAAMI dimension.

Thanks in advance!

The Lapua brass will be bigger. I don't have the exact numbers now, I believe it was about 5 thousand larger. In fact there are two size 284 reamers out there, one for Winchester brass, one for lapua brass.

The 1950s Winchester .284 factory chamber is quite different from the target .284 chamber of today.

The older factory chamber reamers cut the neck .320 to .322.

The new .284 target reamers cut the necks .316 to .318.

The Lapua 6.5 X .284 brass expanded back to accept a .284 is about .309 to .310 in the neck and with a seated bullet it is about .312 to .3125.

Dave Kiffs Reamer print 28-284 SAAMI
shows .501 at the .200 line (webb) with a .322 neck

It has been my experience with the .284 the older Winchester brass was much thicker than the current Winchester brass.
Lapua brass is so good why would anyone use Winchester brass anyway.

Nat, why would anyone use Winchester Brass? Let's see, maybe they hunt short to medium range and are not a target shooter. This is possible.

My measurements on Lapua Brass just ahead of the extractor groove is .4988" average. The older BOXED Winchester brass .4953" average, and the new bagged Winchester Brass is .4942". The Older BOXED Winchester Brass is about 5 grains lighter than Lapua Brass and the new bagged Winchester Brass is about 4 grains heavier than Lapua Brass. In my experience the Lapua Brass is very good but the older Boxed Winchester Brass is at least as good. My measurements may differ from others but I checked and double checked them. Also the weights are average of course.

I forgot to mention Norma and Hornady also makes brass for the 6.5/284. John Hoover and family always shoot good consistently with older boxed Winchester Brass, and Andy Murtaugh broke the Score World Record Light Gun (1000 yard b/r) last year with new BAGGED Winchester Brass, it was just recently broke this year.

As stated earlier, my 6.5x284 Lapua brass measures .499.........
My Winchester .284 brass measures .493.............

Thank you guys! We have the Lapua reamer, I was going to have Kiff grind a reamer for win brass. Looks like we move forward with Lapua brass. ;D
