.284 Win brass?

I've been kicking around the idea of ordering an L.W. .284 Win barrel for my Savage SA, and it doesn't seem to be an easy thing to find brass available.

Am I looking in the wrong places, or is this going to be a big PITA to get brass?

I know that I could neck up 6.5-284 brass, but the high cost factor, as well as the incredible irony are negative factors.

I bought my .284 brass from Cabela's ~1 year ago, and it was in stock then. They had the best price at the time, but I'd check around; Lock, Stock & Barrel generally has good prices.

I checked at Cabela's and indeed they do have the .284 Win brass.

I'd like to be able to get the Berger 180 VLDs near 2900 fps to make the jump from a .243 with 105 Amaxes worthwhile, but I don't know if that's a realistic goal.

I get 2900 fps with the 162 A-Max and 3000 fps with the 154 Interbond using moly and a case full of RL-19 in a 22" barrel, and those are probably SAAMI maximum loads. With a longer barrel, I'd be confident of getting 2800 fps with a 180 but 2900 may be pushing it a bit. The 162 A-Max has a 0.625 BC, so you might want to consider wether the Berger 180 at a lower velocity has any advantage.

I use Lapua 6.5-284 cases, they are simple to neck up, just one pass theough my 284 neck die. I find the lapua cases superior in every way to winchester, well worth the effort as far as i'm concerned.

ronemus is right. Getting 2900 with the 284W case is going to take some brass-pounding loads and you may not get there even then. Either go for a bigger case or a lighter bullet. Most of the 168 grain plus or minus bullets will get you there and the BC of those isn't much lower than the 180 VLD. JMHO
