284 walker/shehane back to straight 284?

I haven't but my buddy who also shoots F-Class is contemplaying it. His Walker just doesn't like anything under full loads and he hits the (locally prescribed) 2850 limit with 180s before it's in its happy space.

The 180 can be and is very competitive/accurate at the 2740 to 2785 FPS range… Never tried the Shehane but if you want more speed the SAUM seems to do well.. 284 does what the 180 needs to do at the lower speeds IME at least..Maybe why Shehane shooters might return to straight 284?

I plan on sticking with the Shehane over the straight 284. Why? I have found blowing the sidewalls out results in easier case extraction, and I can run the Shehane at the upper 284 node and it is VERY easy on primer pockets. I can push 184 hybrids at a very comfortable 2840fps and not trash the brass. If I want to run over 2900fps, then I'll build a SAUM.

Shehane should put you in the winners circle Willow.. Not convinced blowing out side walls at shoulder would result in easier extraction compared to straight 284, I’ve never had an extraction issue in many thousands of rounds, apart from clickers but that’s due to FL Die not matching chamber/reamer correctly. Never had a loose primer either with lots of brass on mid teen firings by then the barrels toast, but I do run all barrels below 2800fps.. I think it comes down more to people’s ability to tune there rifle well and know when to start and stop a string, be hard to tell the difference between a well tuned 284, Walker or Shehane..

My two cents is the only reason you really want to build a Shehane is because you want to run upper nodes. I’ve had both and that’s the only reason that I can see as an advantage. Personally I run the lower nodes so I’ve switched back to a straight 284 but I know plenty of guys who still shoot a Shehane as well. As others have said it just comes down to what you’re comfortable with and enjoy tuning. You can’t go wrong either way. I’ve seen both win at some of the largest matches in the country. Ferrari or McLaren it’s gonna come down to the driver at some point.
