284 vit N550 starting load

was looking for a starting load with the vit N550 in the 284win. I will be using a 175g. smk. been having such great luck with these powders in my 6.5x47 thought i would give it a try in the 284. thanks for any help

That bullet weight goes well beyond the max bullet weight (144 gr) recommended for that caliber in the Vhita Vuori Loading Manual and which doesn't even recommend using N550 for that weight. And the Sierra Reloading Manual doesn't even show loads for a 175 gr SMK and tops out at a 168 gr SMK and again no N550 powder or anything close to that burn rate. Might want to reconsider and use a different powder. Info only.

Just because it's not in the manual doesn't mean it can't be used. But it might be a little fast for that weight bullet. I know it would work with 162 AMax but not sure about 175's.

I'm out of town until tomorrow, I'll look at Quickload and post some data.

Like TonyR said, N560 would work for sure.

QuickLOAD load data using N550 in a .284 Winchester with Sierra 175 gr. Matchkings with a COAL of 3.100" out of a 30" barrel.

Starting load: 47.0 gr. N550 @ 2686 fps. and 48,249 psi.
Max load: 51.7 gr. N550 @ 2900 fps. and 63,423 psi. --- Watch for pressure signs as you approach max load!

thanks for the data Erik. i see on the burn rate charts that n550 is in between the h4350 and h4831sc which is the two go to powders for the 284. so i thought why not.. Again thanks for the reload info and suggestions everyone.

Years ago, when I was shooting the .284 before there was data for VV powder, I was using N550 with SIE 150gr SMK's, shot like a lazer beam.. but the powder didn't work for the heavy bullets. I would try using N560 or N160 with the heavies.

You might consider using Reloder-17. It works very well for me with the 162 A-Max in my .284, and is much less expensive and easier to find than N-5x0 powders. I use N-550 in my .223 because it works better than anything else, but Reloder-17 is my go-to powder for .284.
