284 velocity in 22" barrel

I don't see it as possible in any of the books, question--is there any chance I can get 2800fps out of a straight 284 with 180 grain bullets in a 22" bbl? other caliber ideas in this short 7mm bbl i need to use?
Thanks
Mark

7mm WSM will easily reach 2,800 - 2,850 fps with 180 grainers in a 22" bbl.
I'm not sure about the 284win but hope someone chimes in with their experience.

I don't think the 22-inch will get you much over 2700 fps in a 284. Some people claim so pretty amazing velocities in their 284's but I can't get much over 2815 in my 26 inch and have it group and no signs of excessive pressure. If you were going to achieve it, I think your best bet would be with RL17. I got a little over 2850 with it but it was too temp sensitive for me to win with so I dropped it.

Nope. Not even with reloader 17. Add just 2 inches and it will be real close. You will be around 2700+ at 22 but pressures will keep you from 2800. 162s will easily make it and then some. The shehane will help with a 22. You will still fall short. Is this a rechambering project ?

I assume you're using a short action and capped at 2.80 COAL? Much of the excellent 284 win results with RL-17 and other powders come from using this short action cartridge in a long action rifle that allows the bullet to be seated for a MUCH longer COAL. I'm using a 3.14 COAL with Berger 168 VLD's, RL-17, and 3,000 fps. Yes, it's 29" barrel but I'd wager that you could hit your fps target with a long action and an appropriately chambered 22" barrel.

Still won't happen with 180s. RL17 or not. Too much velocity loss from the short barrel and too much pressure when trying to push the envelope. Add a few inches and you'd be about on. Would be a hot load but you may acheive real close to 3000. I'm running a 30" broughton 5R barrel on a long action 284 win and with RL17 getting 3015 fps with Berger 180vlds. Coal is about 3.155. That's not a hot load but it's a 30" tube. Shave 8" from it and even smoking hot wouldn't get you close to 3000.

Sorry I shouldn't say that you cannot achieve the results with that 22" barrel. It's just my opinion that it cannot happen based on my experience. I never tried pushing it that far. Also my experience is very limited to many on this site that have worked with the 284 in both action configurations. I would be curious to know if IN FACT it can be done. I say it cannot. 162-168 vld bullets can easily be pushed to 3000 in a short action gun at 2.850.

Thanks guys, so the quick story is my wife caught me window shopping this TAC 30 in 7-08--I was looking at the rifle more than caliber--anyway she surprised me with it--I shot the 7-08 a few times, put a 6brx barrel on it but don't want to let the 7-08 bbl just sit in the safe--not much needed for a "hunter" , more need for the long range steel kinda stuff--- so yes a re-chamber project, or sell bbl, or what do ya'll suggest? It sounds like re chamber to a 284 variant and stick to 162 class bullets might be the only option
Thanks
Mark
