284 Update-Long or Short Action

Getting back into long range F Class Open shooting after 10 years. 6.5x284 has been replaced with the 284. Probably replace the receiver with a Defiance, BAT, or Kelbly setup. Plan to shoot 184 Berger Hybrid bullets. Considering a 1-8 twist 30" barrel. What length receiver would work best ? Short action, Long action? Probably will repurpose the action at some future date.

I don't actually shoot F Open but I've built an F Open rig for messing around at 1,000 yds....and possibly get into it formally sometime down the road. Kelbly Atlas (short) action in straight .284. I shoot the Berger 180gr Hybrid Targets

I think most get it in short action. For the occasional time I need to get a round out after chambering I have to remove the stock cheek piece and take the bolt out.....the bullet tip won't clear the ejection port.

For how infrequently it happens it's not an inconvenience. I like having a short bolt throw.

Well an intermediate or standard action will always be better than a short action for any cartridges really chasing bc. with heavy ELD bullets not dreamed of 10-20 years ago or more.

This is why the old Mauser actions were FANTASTIC for .284 Win. for hunting or varminting. That said you can use a modern short action you just can not easily take advantage of the latest greatest heaviest ELD bullets and that is fine if you know that going in.

Anyone that tells you a short action is by itself stiffer and more accurate than a longer action is very ignorant of engineering and should not be listened too. They are either ignorant, a liar or are in the market to sell you something.

Just like you can not increase the stiffness of a barrel by making shallow cuts in it. You also can not remove most of the metal of a barrel and then wrap it in carbon fiber and magickly make it stiffer than the original blank was or more accurate than the original barrel blank before you removed most of it's mass.

So again back to the question at hand intermediate or standard length will both do. If you plan to magazine feed having a little extra space is fine but too much extra room can make for feeding issues so really no need to go any longer than is needed unless you are trying to future proof.
