284 Shehane

Will start fire forming brass next week on my new Shehane, have a Widden bushing resizing die I need to order bushings for. My chamber is a .309 loaded round is .306 was going to order a .305, .304 and a .303, with spring back in brass one of these selections should still give me .001 neck tension shouldn’t it? Will be trying 180 Hybreads. Barrel is a 30’’ 8 twist Krieger. Also wondering what tension others have found that seem to work best in this round.

.309 Chamber? Never seen one that small but I guess it'll work fine if you turn your necks enough. Suggest you have at least .004 clearance between your chamber and loaded round necks: .303 to 305 loaded round. I'd get bushings that are .002 and .003 less than your loaded round size.

Remember also that the thinner you've turned your neck walls, the less spring back you'll see occur. Your neck tension won't be nearly as much as you think if the neck walls are thin. With a loaded round at .306, I have to believe the neck brass is thin. You may want a little smaller bushing. I think I'd shoot for .003-.005 less than the loaded round. This is only my observation based on your information. Please ask for other opinions on this particular issue. Good luck.

You might want to re-check your chamber dimensions.
.313 and .315 are common turned neck chambers. I'm running a .315 with a loaded round of .310.
I usually shoot for .002-.0025 of neck tension with a turned neck and .004-.006 neck wall clearance in that cartridge.
I hope this helps,

Lloyd

I had Dave with PT&G build the Reamer for me as per BILL Shehane's advice with a .309 neck, I turn all my brass for my Comp. rifles to .011 wall thickness with a 21 century turner, that should leave me with a .306 loaded round, I have a dummy round and it is .306 leaving me 1.5 thousands clearance on each side, a little less than my others (2 thousands), if I have to I can turn them another 25 thousands to give me 2 thousands clearance.
