.284 Shehane start loads with RL17????

Virgin Lapua brass......need to know where to start with RL 17 for fireform/initial testing loads.

Berger 180's, BR2 and/or Federal 215M (Magnum Match)

Thinking somewhere around 50-52grns to start. ???

Cya:

Given a 30-31" barrel, a 284 Shehane will give you about 2980 with 54 grains of RL-17 and around 3020 with 55 grains (from memory without looking at my log). I have had zero pressure indications with these loads. I will note that this was with a 3 lug Gilkes-Ross action and a 3 lug Barnard -- both without ejectors.

RL-17 will sneak up on you without any pressure signs till you blow or smoke a primer. If you take a look at the 7mm load data on this site, you will see my brief pressure and fps work up on this powder with 180 VLD.

Mine is not a Shehane, just a regular .284. 32 inch Rock Creek bbl, tight chamber. With 51.8 grs of RL17, I am getting 2930 fps with a moly'd B180vld.

Thanks guys,

These would be fireforming loads so I was will start low and work up. I checked the .284 load data and the only load was 52gr with the RL17.

I am using a Rem XR-100 action with a 30" Krieger 5R 1:9

I did a little fireforming for the 284 Shehane with RL-17. I based these loads on QuickLoad estimates and some suggestions from others on this forum. I had been told that 54gr H4831SC was a good fireforming load so I tried RL-17 loads that gave the same peak pressures as H4831SC. In my gun, 48.4 grains of RL-17 gives about the same MV as 54gr H4831SC and the cases do fireform nicely. I used Lapua brass, Federal 210M primers and Berger 180's jammed about 0.010 inches. Cartridge over-all length was a little less than 3.200 inches. MV was a little over 2700fps on a cold, wet February day. I haven't done much with RL-17 because it doesn't fill the case very well.

I'm @ 52.0 of 4831 sc with a 175 sierra and 210 m primer fireforming . Ran some speed tests with some r-17

Maybe I just don't get the lure of the 284 Shehane -

When I measure the water capacity difference between brass from my 284 Win and brass from a 284 Shehane (given to me by a 284 Shehane shooter), it's only a little over 2 gr. greater water capacity difference which just does not seem to be very much (i.e. you don't blow the shoulder forward at all and it's only around .010" bigger in diameter at the shoulder, but essentially the same at the base). Considering fire forming, custom dies, etc. I just question it being worth it. Recently I decided to do another 7mm project but went instead with a 7mm RSAUM as it definitely gets you more "boiler room", it has a good long neck, it's known to be accurate as can be, and the case OAL is a good bit shorter, factory brass and factory die sets - what's not to like about that, except maybe that you need a magnum bolt face (which is really no big deal in most cases).

Am I missing something here?

Robert

I dont think you are missing any thing Robert except barrel life off the two rounds compared to each other. The shehane will be better on barrel life compared to the saum, which i like by the way and a future calibre on my list .
