284 Shehane reamer dimensions

Erik Cortina

Team Lapua Brux Borden Captain
I need to order a reamer for my 284 Shehane and eventhough I want to turn brass, I want to turn at least as possible. What do you guys recommend? Is .315" enough or should I go smaller? Also, what kind of freebore should I get for the 180gr. Bergers? .220" enough or too much?

Any help would be greately appreciated.

Thank you.

HI Eric and JB...Ihope they ((JHardy and/or TonyR))respond on here....because I am also contemplating a .284 (either a .284 or .280 AI )and am curious what is good with the big Sierra and Berger (175-180 class) bullets...I am interested in a FB dim. that will alllow the use of the big uns' and maby even some 150-168's!! if pracitcal. any and all info will be much apreciated....OBTW ..Eric ,,,most of my .284 brass measures .3135 with a Sierra bullet seated....sooo I hope that helps with your reamer Neck Dia. choice....Roger

I have the PT&G "Mark King" Shehane reamer. It seems to be about the best balance for several bullets and is a perfect match for the 180 Hybrid. (.313 neck and .225 freebore) I also have a straight .284 reamer that is .313 X .220.

I ended up going with a .313" neck and it has met and exceeded all my expectations!

Erik what were your trim, neck turning and bushing sizes please

I settled on .220" freebore. Loaded round is .309" and I use a .307" bushing.

Erik,

Are you shooting your new 7 WSM wildcat in Ireland? BTW, congratulations and good luck!

Thank you!

No magnum yet, I'm shooting my 284 Shehane, but with VV N560 it's like shooting a magnum, 2975 fps. with Berger 180 gr. Hybrids!

The "Mark King" reamer was made up based on one of my dummy cartridges with a 180 VLD seated out to clear the donut area. As it happened, the bearing surface on my first lot of bullets was on the short end of the range which happens to be at the upper end of the range I've seen in the Hybrids. So, as Erik says, the dimensions on the print are about perfect for the Hybrids but I would add another 0.020 inches to the freebore if you plan to shoot the 180 VLDs.

Tony,

Thanks for the heads up but I do not shoot the VLDs any more. I was shooting 180 LRBT in my .284 but the Hybrid is now the obvious choice. The Shehane is under construction and should be done sometime before Autumn.

Another sizing die option is Warner Tool. Send them 5 fired cases and they'll set you up a custom die that will be perfect. Not the cheapest option but well worth the expense.

Warner's die is an excellent choice if you have a press that accommodates 1¼-12 dies. Most of the large presses have an insert for ⅞-14 dies. When the insert is removed, 1¼-12 dies can be used.

Here's a link to an article describing the Warner die. Not sure if it made the journey to the new site.

+1 on the Warner die. Once you have it, they can quickly make inserts for anything up to 30-06 length and WSM case diameter. There is also a Magnum version and I think a 50BMG. First class workmanship.
