284 Shehane Questions

Story: I had this rifle built a couple of years ago, most accurate rifle I've ever owned, sold it, missed it, bought it back. I shot 180 VLD's in it before. I had two loads for it, one at 54.2 H4831SC and the other at 55.8 H4831SC. Both loads were jammed .010. Now, I am using Norma brass instead of Lapua and shooting 180 Hybrids. I ran my ladder test last week and found a node at 54.8, 55.0, and 55.2. My test stopped at 55.8. Looking back through my notes, I went all the way to 56.8 when testing the 180 VLD's. I now want to run another ladder test above 55.8 for these Hybrids. My question is; how do the Hybrids handle pressure compared to the VLD's? Do the Hybrids generally take more powder/velocity before showing pressure?

Secondly, what is your trim length on your Shehane brass?

The Berger VLD's have about 25K (somewhere in that vicinity) MORE bearing surface than the Hybrids do. So if you are running your 56.8gr load of H4831SC and merely changed to Hybrids, with NO OTHER changes, your pressures would be somewhat lower. I trim my brass to 2.150"...

Theoretically, yes you could... However, theory and practice sometimes get their wires crossed. Personally, I think you are on the mild side of loads anyhow.. If you read my article on here I posted earlier this year "284 Shehane Preliminary load development".. and Last week I posted an "UPDATE" "sort of" about using H1000, you would get an idea of where I load at..

I am on the light side. I don't ever push for velocity for the sake of velocity. The 54.2 load I used with VLD's was only 2750ish. It was EXTREMELY accurate though.

Good info in that thread ShootDots. I surely don't want to ruin my brass in 2-3 firings. I think I will load a ladder from 55.6 up to 57.0 to see what I get.

I use VV165 at 57 gr with 180 bergers [non hybrid]. Very very accurate with no
screw ups with primer pockets on Labua expanded brass. Next week I am going to try
Seliller & Bellot primers with my new Bartlein 32 in no taper. Las barrel was acting up at
1985 shots.

Which 180 vld’s We’re you using? The target(yellow box) or the hunting vld(orange box/thicker jacket)?

Another reason you could likely run your loads a little higher with hybrids is because VLDs GENERALLY prefer to be jammed .010" into the lands, while the Hybrids GENERALLY prefer more jump, which will both decrease pressure, and allow you to add a little more powder.
