284 shehane H1000

Has anyone tried H1000 in a 284 shehane? I understand it's slow for the caliber but also believe it should be capable to drive the 180's at the 2800+ area and burn quite cool and with low pressure. It might be perfect for keeping those primer pockets healthy longer and reduce potential throat wear from faster powders as well.

I tried it extensively.. You can get the velocity you want BUT your e.s.'s will be large.. It is just a tad too slow. Now if they ever come out with a 195gr or thereabouts as Berger has alluded to, it might be worth another look.. But presently, it is too slow for optimal use..

Might want to look closer at N165 and N160.
The 165 is slow and cool Burning while it works well for heavy bullets and long freebore.
It wont give you the velocity of n560 or rl 17 though.
But velocity is decent and sd is in the single digits for me.

Benjamin- I believe we actually might have discussed it in further detail. A shooter here in Aus has tried it and claimed fantastic waterline to 1200yds. He didnt have a chronograph to test his figures but the results were more important at the time.

Ares- In Australia its very easy to get our own ADI powders. Vithavouri and all other manufacturer powders are only available in small amounts and fairly infrequently. Its just easier to use the domestic product. H4350 and H4831sc are both made here and so is H1000. While the first two are proven to be effective, it would be interesting to see just how the latter would go.

BY1983, if you can make H1000 work, I would use it! In my 6.5 x 284 (I had 2 of them before my Shehane) it stretched barrel life out to 1600+ rounds. I tried to make it work in my .284 Shehane, however, it could never match IMR 7828 or H4831... It was my FIRST powder to try because I believe it would REALLY stretch barrel life in the .284 Shehane..

I recently tried it in a 284 Shehane LG barrel to try to get the velocity up. For this barrel it was just too slow. Even though I could get a decent amount of pressure, once I put it across the crony, it just wasn't up there with the velocities you can get with the faster powders. The limited amount of velocity spread testing I did also showed it gave wider spreads as others mentioned.
I was realy hoping it would help to get the velocity up in this tight barrel, but no go.
