284 Shehane and RL17

I'm curious of any of you using RL-17 in your 284 Shehane with the 180 hybrids what is your powder charge?

I tried 55 grains yesterday with the 180 hybrid that has been HbN coated and blew a primer out of the case on the first shot.

Reading in the 7mm guide there was a guy that tested up to 56.5 grains before he popped one so I backed down to 55 and dang if I didn't do it also.

So Now I'm curious of what are you all shooting in yours.

I run 4350 in mine , the burn rate of rl17 is very close to 4350 , I start to see pressure around 52.5 . I know some guys run it a little higher but not that much , I think someone go there powders mixed up. 56.5 is a load for 4831.

Try start around 51 to 51.5 and go up from there.

After looking yesterday at the burn rate chart I agree it's right next to 4350,
However I also know a guy using 53 grains in a straight 284 so somehow numbers arent adding up in my mind and to my barrel.

Here's copy of the article in the caliber section of this forum.

You have to know what his chamber dimensions are. For all we know, he could have some crazy FB length and be seating his bullets out way out there so pressures are lower.

Is your intended goal speed?

You can get to 2930-2950 fps with a 32" barrel and the right FB length and seating them out longer while using H4831SC or H4350.

Anything beyond this and you might want to consider the 7 RSAUM no?

no velocity goal in mind I just wanted to try the powder since I had a lb of it and see if I could squeeze more accuracy from my build.

will the FB make that much difference , I read that article when I built my first straight .284 , loaded up some cases with 54g of 4831 and had the same experience you did. ended up at 52.8g any higher was not good. some of the guys I shoot with run up to 55g 4831 for the .284 ?

Thanks you all for the replies and the PM's for suggestions and advice. I believe since I've got it shooting well with the 4831sc I'm just going to stick with that powder. When I had it out late Monday I had a few rounds loaded at 57.5 grains and just for giggles I put three down range at 500 and it had 1.398 horizontal I don't remember the verticle but it came in at .8 moa on verticle. It was a very impressive three shots to say the least.

I'm going to ditch the RL-17 idea, I had it and was curious. I think now with one shot of it my curiosity is cured. I can't ever remember shooting one round of anything and blowing a primer out the case on the first shot. But I guess as they say first time for everything. And to think I thought I loaded it on the conservative side since I do coat my bullets......
