284 Shehane accuracy and velocities

I think I might have slightly higher expectations for my rig. Don't get me wrong...I am pleased with how it is doing so far. I will have a chance to take it out to 800, 900, and 1K tomorrow in a local match so we will see how the load I chose goes beyond 300 yards.

So, my groups at 100 yards are averaging 0.261 MOA at 100 yards - This is the average of (4) 5-shot strings. Velocity is 2890 fps with a SD of 9 and ES of 13. Vertical at 300 yards looks really good with a window of 56.6-57gr.

Is this about right for velocity and accuracy for this chambering or should I be developing this a bit more?

284 Shehane - No neck turn 0.317 / .235 FB
30" Bartlein Barrel
180gr hybrids pointed
Lapua brass
56.8gr H4831SC
10 thou of the lands, about 1.5 thou neck tension

Your long range results will not match the 100 yard MOA. 2.5" at 600 was my best.

Good Luck!

I think you are EXACTLY where you want and need to be, although to help keep vertical at a minimum, I had to go to just under 1K neck tension. Just watch, if all goes the way it "normally goes" you will shoot just fine.. However, I, myself, always take the load I THINK will work and run about 30 or so down the bore at 1000 yards. If it performs as expected, great! That is USUALLY the case. However, there have been a few times where I have tested "out there" and had either terrible groups or more vertical than I had imagined. Having said that, from what you have explained to me, I BELIEVE you will be all set to go. Just keep a sharp eye on the wind / mirage and make EVERY shot count.

I dont have much to add besides RL-17 is always the hype for a little more umf with the 284's so I have read...

For the OP though, .2's should shoot fairly well at 1000 though I would think. For my long range work I try to get a load that delivers consistent .25ish 5 shot groups at 100 yards during load work up. Then play out long and see how it performs. .26 is just as close to that and given your probably shooting vlds of some sort I would think it would do fine stretching its legs with that load. I tend to agree with you though, I think a little more time tinkering with loads you could shrink it up another hair or two. If your 10thou off the lands , imo whats wrong with trying a few 9thou off and see what happens... I tend to find time spent tinker on little stuff like that makes a difference here and there..
