.284 SAAMI chamber?

Thinking of buying a .284 barrel to shoot F-Open. Want to buy a pre-fit barrel for a Savage. Would also like to use a bushing die to reload.

I am wondering if a SAAMI chamber (which most manufacturers seem to offer) will pose any problems because of the .322 neck ? Most recommend reducing neck diameter less than .005 with a bushing to avoid concentricity issues.

Pac-Nor offers a chamber with a .315 neck. Would this be a better choice, and will it require neck turning?

Any one know of another manufacturer of Savage pre-fits that offers a better chamber option?

Any help is appreciated!

I think a .322 neck will leave you with too much extra neck clearance, especially if you are planning on using Lapua brass. The latest batch of Lapua 6.5-284 brass I got measures .3125" with a 180 hybrid seated without turning the neck. I am not sure how thick the Winchester brass is at the neck but I believe most shooters who are not turning necks are going with a .320" neck when using Win brass. The .315 neck will require neck turning, that said for long range F-class I believe it is the better choice. My reamer has a .315 neck and lets me take enough brass off for a full clean up without getting excessive neck clearance. Ideally you should have about .004-.006" neck clearance for the .284.
Good luck,
Ben

Hi
I’m not aware of any pre-fit barrels for 284, but have some info on cases and chambers. I’m setting up a 284 Win (7mm) 26” #3 sporting barrel on a Tikka T3 for medium range hunting.
Currently I’m looking into cases, reamer spec and dies. Also measuring a few things.
New Win brass body is about 5 thou less in dia than A SAAMI chamber spec .
New Lapua brass is larger than Win and ideal for a 284 SAAMI chamber giving min body clearance.
Both Lapua and Win have loaded neck dia around 313-315” unturned, a little too much clearance in a SAAMI 322” neck. A 317-318” chamber neck would be fine for either for a hunting rifle or even target.
If you intend to use Win brass only as I do, then you could also reduce chamber body dia to suit, but you will not be able to use new Lapua brass. Having 3 thou body clearance with new Win brass is ok IMO.
If you measure your Win (or Lapua) brass after FL resizing and find the body smaller than new case, reducing the reamer body dia would be of real benefit. Neck dia is not the only consideration!
Would like to hear from other 284 users.

LC

Thanks for the advise.

I thought the SAAMI chamber would be less than ideal and the Winchester vs Lapua size is another issue that has to be considered. Guess I'll keep looking for a barrel maker that has a better reamer or consider another cartridge. Really want to use a pre-fit.

Why not purchase your own reamer made to your specs? David Kiff and the whole gang over at PTG are a dream to work with! ;)
Think about the time, and money, you will save when you shoot out the first and go on to the second, third.... ???
