.284 on short or long action

I think I know the answer to this question, but thought I would ask for confirmation and opinions.

Are most of the .284's for BR and F-class built on long or short actions? The reason I ask is that I have a stock Rem 700 SA in 7-08 that I am considering to give a major upgrade. I have a custom long range hunter in 6.5-284 and have sort of become partial to the .284 case. Would I be better served to trade up to a long action or would the short action serve just as well? I'm likely looking toward an F-class style build.

well I am by no means an expert, but if you want to mag feed and shoot the 180s, a short action will definitely hurt case capacity, which the 284 does not have an excess of to begin with....

My .284 shehane F class rifle is built on a Stolle Panda F class action which is a short action.
No problems with cartridge length of 3.175" as single feed, the only thing is you will have to take the bolt out to remove a loaded round. In F class shooting this is not an issue as it is rare to need to unload.

The long .284 bullets need to be seated with the bullet bearing surface forward of the shoulder neck juncture of the case. If the bullets are seated with the bearing surface behind the neck shoulder juncture you will have fliers.
In the short action rifles I have built in .284 repeaters magazines had to be cut and extended. the bottom of the action had to be milled so the long bullets would feed. These are not issues encountered in mid sized and long actions. Single shot SA may encounter ejection problems with loaded rounds.

My first 284 Shehane was built on a Remington 700SA that started life as a 308 prone gun then became a 6mmBR then a 284 Shehane with a 31 inch straight 1.250 inch barrel and it was a very accurate rifle. The short action used single shot is not a problem except removing a loaded round. I would be more concerned about the reduced stiffness of a 700 long action with a cutout for a magazine than removing the bolt to take out a loaded round with the SA. My cartridge overall length with the 180 Hybrids seated out in the neck is 3.250 inches.

Thanks for the input, fellas. So in short, (bad pun) a .284 on a SA will function well as a single shot. If a repeater is desired, then either the SA and mag needs modified, else go with a LA. This is assuming one wants to shoot 180 gr bullets...why would you not want to shoot the heavies?! Decisions, decisions.

Ahhh, just go with a long action and get some piece of mind. I went with a Winchester Model 70 Long action for my .284 and have never looked back.

If by neck size you mean the length of the neck, then no. By my calculations from the cartridge guides on this website, the neck length is 0.3032" for the .308 and 0.2847" for the .284.

I am sorry, yes I mean 473 bolt face, same as 243 22-250 308 etc.?

What bolt face is required for a 284 as I am thinking about building one! Just want to see if I have an action ready to go laying around!

It uses a .473 bolt face, same as a .308 . The rim is rebated, meaning the cartridge is greater in diameter than .473 above the rim.
