284 OAL 180 hybrid

New rifle should be here in a week or two, I'm wanting to get some rounds loaded up now though. Just looking for a base line in where to start, 284 Winchester, with a .230 freebore and shooting a 180 hybrid. What would my length to lands be?

Mine like being off the lands .050, so all I could recommend is starting at the lands and working out, you will see the difference, rarely have I seen a 180 Jag's that liked being in the lands.

Turned out RL17 was my best friend, but that's my barrel. Nothing else came close to it.

Your base to ogive should be around 2.560" at the lands with a 0.230 freebore. I have had 6 barrels now and found nodes at around 30 and 50 thousandths jump.

Measure your chamber when you get the rifle though. Dont assume you have a .230 freebore just because that is what you ordered in the reamer.

FeMan is correct . Measure your chamber ( make a dummy round to the lands) to see what you really have in seating depth to the lands. I suggest with our hybrid bullets that you start your seating depth testing at .015 off the lands and work back towards the cartridge case in .005 increments. Do this using the lowest powder charge listed for the bullet/powder/cartridge combination you are loading for. Once you find your seating depth accuracy node. Work your load back up slowly checking for pressure signs and accuracy as you increase the powder charge until you find your highest velocity accuracy node. If you need any load data for your .284 using our 180 HYBRID contact us at techsupport@bergerbullets.com
Take care,
