Can anyone tell be what a straight .284 recoil with a brake is comparable to? I have a bat 3L screwed and glued but not sure if it can handle the recoil

The Bat can handle it, I shoot a small Bat B with a 284 with no problems.

BATs are built like tanks. They are over-engineered from a safety standpoint.

That being said, recoil with a 284 isn't bad at all in a 20+ lb gun. I can shoot my f-open rifle that is chambered in 284 Shehane all day. There are a few factors that are going to affect your rifle, one is weight.

how heavy is your rifle?

Is this a bench gun, range gun, long range gun, tactical rifle?

My straight 284 WIN in a 19 lb HG/F-O is shot with both a brake for BR and with out for F-O. The difference in recoil is a reduction of 60% with the brake.
When using a front rest (both BR and F-O) I use free recoil for the brake and touch the butt with my shoulder for F-O. The recoil with out the brake is VERY manageable. My 7X57 hunting rifle recoils more and it is way less than my 30-06.

Warning tho, as I am trying to learn F Class shooting and haven't quite got the set-up just right, I have given myself some scope bites when holding too close to the scope prone!

My .284 light gun with the brake compares to my 6 Dasher w/o one.
Yes, this is how I compare mine, just like a 6BR for me. I would not like shooting my 284 free recoil without a brake, but with one, I shoot it free recoil just the same as when I have the unbraked 6BR barrel in, the rifle moves back the same amount.
