.284 loads

20series

Prone .22, F-TR and F Class Shooter
Hi all from the UK

Sorry if this has been covered before, I did a search and didn't come up with much.

I'm hopefully getting my new .284 in February and wondered if anyone can recommend some likely starting loads for 175 gn SMK's I'm probably going to use these as they are fairly easy to come by and are sensibly priced.

The set up is 30 inch Bartlein 1-9 twist barrel, I'm necking up some 6.5x284 Lapua brass

I currently have some Reloder 17 on the shelf as I use it for my 308 load but I can get my hands on most powder fairly easy.

Any pointer will be greatly received

Alan

In my chambered .284(was cut for Lapua brass, using Winchester brass), in 95 degree weather, I was using 49.0 grains of RL17 with a Sierra 175gr SMK

I found better groups with H-4831 and H-4350 than with Reloader 17. Yes, reloader 17 gave me 150fps higher velocities. I shot Berger bullets, Hornady, Nosler, Barnes, and Speer bullets from 140-180 grain.

I found the same to be true of H4831 vs. RL17 in two of three 284 bbls. I have. H4831 gives less velocity than RL17, but the accuracy with S175MKs, as well as Berger & JLK 180s was more consistent with 4831. 54.5grs of 4831 was a max charge with MOLY'd 175s & 180s, giving around 2850fps. Would strongly advise that anyone reading this work up to this charge if using moly'd bullets, and consider it over-max if using bare bullets.
