.284 fps - is my barrel fast?

I'm shooting a straight .284 win 28" barrel. I'm shooting 168gr berger VLD's with 53gr. H4350 and my chrony'd fps is 3000-3020. My chronograph isn't the 'best' but my ballistic drop chart and my POI for distances past 300yds is showing that it is not far off (if at all). I do not have pressure signs and I'm on my 4th firing and no issues (primer pocket, ejector, click etc) . But this just seems very fast to me, I thought I'd be somewhere around 2940-2950.

Also just as a sh!^ and giggles I loaded some extra cases I had with 57+gr. H4350 with 120 vmaxs and I'm getting 3440 fps and many reloads plus good accuracy to boot. This all seems much faster than I thought I'd get. Anyone got input or should I just count my blessings and is this the norm?

OP, fire that load a distance and see if your come-ups match your velocity. If not, then your chrono is fast.
I hope this helps,

Lloyd

Sounds like if your drop numbers are on with your chrono, your on the money. Those numbers sound about right. Kind of surprising that 4350 is getting 3000 but the numbers don't lie on your drop data. RL17 is getting those numbers in most 28-30 in guns pretty easy. H4350 would be the next choice for me in the 284 and it's working for you.

I'm using the same bullet with a 29" barrel, 53gr. of RL-17 and getting over 3k. I'd say your results seem typical.

I'd be interested to know how long your brass lasts with that load. Sounds hot to me. I am running 55.6gr of 2213SC (4831SC) and am getting over 2900fps with 168s and about 2830 with 180s. Brass life isn't great though.

Unfortunately to verify velocity using your dope is not reliable.

1. You have to verify your scopes clicks are exactly what they're supposed to be up to where you'll be using them. Do a tall target test through the whole range of your scopes elevation and you'll be surprised.

2. You have to set up a target somewhere around the distance where you predict the bullet will be going around 1,350 - 1,400 fps.

3. You have to have the exact BC of the bullet.

Some barrels are faster that others.

When set up correctly in the right light conditions, almost all light-screen based chronos will be accurate to within 10 fps.

The labradar and the Magnetospeed are within 5 fps in all weather conditions.

I have a 32" Lilja barrel,168 Berger VLD and 53 of H4350 gives me 2950fps. with a RCBS chrono.Also the same velocity with 57 AR2213SC(H4831SC).

Thanks Pete! I've chrono'd this load a few times/on different days and come up with pretty much the same numbers. Its not the best chrono but it has many different loads shot through it and the others always seem to be in the expected range. I dunno. . . is 53 your go to load for the 168's?
