.284 Chamber Questions

Hello all. I’m thinking of building a .284 in the future for a general purpose hunting rifle that’s light and effective out to 700 yards on medium game. I have done a lot of research, but I can’t seem to find exactly what I’m looking for. I want to be able to use Winchester or Bertram brass, both measure around 0.495 at the base. All of the reamer prints I can find have a 0.500-0.501 base. I understand this works with Lapua, but this seems oversized for the Winchester spec brass.

Is there any reamers I can purchase that are spec’d for Winchester brass, or will I have to custom order one with a tighter base diameter and the neck and freebore specs of my choosing? Thanks!

What dies are you guys running? I was going to go with Hornady, because I’ve used them before and I like them for the price. The only problem is a member on another forum told me that the Hornady FL die sizes the case head down to like 0.496 and overworks the brass and causes case head failure after 5 shots. Thanks

I built a 284 Winchester, SAAMI specs across the board, "EXPECT" I had it throated for 180 grain Berger's. I made sure 99% of the bearing surface was in the neck, and not even the boattail was past the shoulder/neck crimp.

It's one of the most accurate rifles I have shot!

I use Hornady sizing dies with Winchester brass in a SAAMI chamber, and I see no signs of overworking the brass. I'm only up to 5 loadings, but sizing effort is reasonable - I would probably notice if I was sizing 0.005" at the base. My sized brass does not have a step at the base so I think it's a non-issue.

Do you know the diameter of your brass at the .200” line on fired vs sized brass?

I have several 284s and shoot WW, Lapua and Norma brass; most;y WW though. If you want me to measure cases and look at my reamer prints later PM me. Redding makes a small-base body die fore the 284. I use that on one of my rifles to avoid the extraction "click".

I was surprised how much my Hornday dies actually under sized my brass compared to Wilson F/L dies.
Measure before and after at the .200 and the shoulder neck edit-(case) junction , you may be surprised as well

I use Redding FL dies, and Wilson seater dies. I have been totally happy with both.

The Redding FL Bushing Die I have wont size at the .200” on my necked up Lapua 6.5x284 brass, after 6 or so firings I have a stiff click on bolt lift. It’s not the dies fault, the chamber was .500” at base, My new Norma match reamer that I got from PTG is .501” so I’m hoping that extra .001” will be enough for my Die to size down .0005” to .001”. Otherwise I’ll send some brass to Whidden for a custom.
