284 Build - looking for comments and suggestions

Hello

Here is the current build list. The rifle is a general use arm. Will see some hunting. But mainly a slow fire target rifle. Rifle will see mid range and beyond, we have access to steel as far as you want to shoot. Hence the barrel contour, the rifle needs to be hauled in on my back. Looking for about 12-13 pounds for all in weight

-defiance deviant. Long Action
-Bartlien rem varmint. At least that's what's in stock. Looking at a palma too. For length I'm looking at 25 inches. For twist looking at the 1:9

For bullets I'm looking at shooting the 162 amax and the 168 matrix.

Now at the reamer. I will be using lapua brass. From searching here I have found that a neck of .317 should be the way to go for a non turn neck?? I run a tight neck dasher. So no biggie turning a neck. What would be good neck for just cleaning up lapua brass? Lastly free bore. Cliff had a post awhile back stating the .188 would be the way to go with the 160's?

Then I guess lastly, is there a gunsmith out there sitting on a reamer meeting these specs or better to just get one ordered

And totally open to changes here. I'm just doing online research for free bore and neck. Would love to hear from other 284 Shooters

Thanks

To date I have never purchased my own reamer. After a few custom rifles I do see the light so to speak and want a chamber cut correctly for my build. But. I see this as about a 300-500 round rifle, round count per year, and may do a switch barrel too. So longevity is not a main concern. So I see finding the right Smith with reamer being a decent avenue too

To take advantage of the high BC of the 7MM bullets I would go with as long a barrel as you can manage. I have a 27" on mine and would not want to go any less. You might want to look at the "Light Target" barrel also. Its a good compromise. I shoot the 162s in mine and love the 284.

OK.........

My deal is slightly different, but here is what I know...........so far.

.284 Shehane
Bat M
32" Bartlein 1.25"
162 Amax
H4350
.220 Freebore

I don`t have my brass yet, but I will turn it for 100% clean up and add .003 for clearance.

By now you might have guessed this will not be carried, it will be for long range varmints, rock chucks...etc.

Hoping it will weigh....A LOT to help with the recoil.....From the truck to the bench.....that is all.

Phil.

Raptor,,, what free bore did you cut for? And what velocities are you getting?

Phil,,,, on your free bore. How did you select this

Thanks guys. Funny, the more I get into the 284. The more I see a greatly divergence for builds.

I am not sure what my free bore is. I let my smith decide on what it should have. I know its cut for the 162s because my son and son in law have 284s built by another smith and theirs have a long free bore but still shoot the 162s just fine. I am guessing their rifles have at least .040 or .050 more than mine. You will love the 284. I will never be without one as long as I am doing long range shooting. I have 2223 rounds through mine. I just had it bore scoped and still no fire cracking. I have had to chase the throat about .025 not bad for over 2000 rounds. Try that with a 7mm mag. If my memory still serves me correctly I believe I am pushing mine right at 2950+.

Eric,

I was thinking about this combo for a long range rock chuck gun, by long range I`m talking over 1000 yards.....

Do you think the .220 Free bore is to much since I don`t plan on using the 180`s???

Phil.

.220" freebore is perfect for the 162's. I used to shoot them out of a .284

I'd make sure you can find the bullets your wanting to shoot readily before building around that.
Any reason your not looking at one of the 6 or 6.5mm for this? I just put together a 6mm06 for the same purpose and just for a Wth gun. I shoot a 7 mag and I see the 6-6.5 bullets all the time. I haven't bought bullets for my 7 in a long time

Thanks guys, the reason I'm going with the 7mm I because I have a 6.5 SAUM. Love the round, rifle is very accurate. I'm building this to take a little pressure off that rifle. Make something more target dedicated with a reasonable barrel life.

I will not have my action until xmas, so have a little time. I'll search back for cliffs comments on freebore, he had a pretty good summary posted on here.

I would look at a 6mm or another 6.5 just for choice and availability of bullets. My thoughts anyway. I've seen 162 amax for sale here buy they are pricey. Midway had them a few days ago but sell out fast. Tons of 6mm stuff and 6.5 on the shelves where I'm at. I was going to go 280ai when I did my 6-06 but didn't want two calibers to run through the bullets I still have
