284 brass

Going to try my hand on the 284 for f-class. What brass. I saw Norma shooters pack. Is that ok. Or do I neck up Lapua 6.5? Mike

WW and Lapua are thinner than Peterson and Norma. Keep that in mind. I have a 0.318 neck for no turn WW/Lapua and a 0.321 for no turn with Peterson/Norma. I like Lapua and Peterson the best, but they all seem to shoot very well.

I have never used Peterson brass, fairly certain I will try some soon
Out of the others available, I have shot my best groups and scores with Norma.

I have shot all three mentioned, Lapua necked up, Norma and Peterson. All are good but Norma have a smaller base diameter and, if your reamer does not account for it, may be hard to size back down after a couple of firings. Even using a small base die many of the loaded cartridges were a little resistant to bolt closure and had a click at the 'top' of extraction. Also, the 'oversize' base dimension in my chamber compared to Norma brass allows more expansion of the primer pocket and the pockets are definitely a little less tight after a firing and definitely 'loose' by 3+. Neither Lapua or Peterson suffered this issue in my chamber. Although I have several thousand Norma cases left I chose to switch brass instead of having my reamer reground...which would also remedy the problem. I now use Peterson and have been impressed with the stuff.

I have the Norma, no complaints thus far.
Not cheap. At least not to me.

Grafs is the exclusive distributor for Peterson 284 Win brass.

I have ran both lapua and Norma, and as long as you work up a load for whatever brand of brass you decide on (different volume), you won't go wrong.

My 284 is a hunting rifle, but I’ve found Winchester brass to be acceptable. For match shooting it might pay to try necked up Lapua or one of the others, but culled Winchester might also be a way to go.

From my Gunsmith and me .
My Rifle has a JGS Reamer for 180 gr. HB .
Lapua neck up no Turn. Peterson you will have to Turn . Winchester will work also.

Using Lapua with Widden Dies ! Happy .

For the Testing Brought 100 Winchester Red Bag. Not Bad , flash holes are tear drops NOT ROUND .
It works well also .
I have to back off my load with Winchester to get the same Velocity as Lapua .

Good Luck,
Don
