280AI with IMR 7828????

Hey guys I'm starting to work up some loads for my Ackley. I have a few pounds of both H4831, H4350, and IMR 4350. I will be shooting or tyring to shoot 162 Amaxs. I'm working out of town and have a chance to buy some IMR7828. Do I need to get it for the 280AI. I've read a few loads that use it but seems the majority are using one of the first 3 powders I mentioned. Just wondering yall opionion. Get the 7828 or spend that money on more bullets?
Thanks

I found anything slower that 4831 dropped of in performance/

In mine, I found just the opposite. I tried all of the more popular choices before trying H1000 and N160, both of which would be considered too slow by some. But they both proved to be better performers in my rifle, by a fairly large margin...YMMV.--Mike

N160 is very close to H4350 in burn rate; if you meant N165, then yeah, I'd agree - it'd be good in a 280 AI.

I bought an 8lb jug of IMR7828SSC to try in both straight 284 & 280 AI. In both instances, I get more consistent, slightly better accuracy with either H4831 or H4831SC. 7828 will work, and it may be that in another bbl, the results would be reversed. But I've since tried to find a good application for the 7828SSC, and at least to date, it's just not produced the accuracy I can get with other powders.

Mike,

hodgden burn rate chart give N160 a slightly faster rate than h4831, however the 1000 is much slower, in the range of n165, I found RL22 (faster than either ) non performer and n165 a total failure.

Hi Mike. I have a 280 AI 40 deg shoulder. Hart 27" barrel.

4350 shoots OK, haven't tried 4831.
My best accuracy is with Reloader 19 and 22.

You probably under stand this but I will say it any way. Each rifle is different and you have to let it tell you what it wants to be fed. I know that in these times getting a lot of different powders to try is almost impossible. So, all I can say to you is what works for me in my rifle.
However, giving 19 and 22 a go might show you the right path.

Another thing, please don't put any faith in burn rate charts! They are just for a ROUGH comparison of powders at the very most.

Good Luck.

I do shoot H162AMaxes in my 284, but most of what I mentioned in my 1st reply was referenced to my use with S175MKs & Berger 180s.

I use 7828 in 7mm rem Mag, 150 NBT and 162 Amax, Rem 700 Sendero. Standard primers and I get great groups, plenty of velocity. Understand yours is a 280...but....

Last 3 deer were 331, 465, 625 yards, all one shot, DRT, and the 331 was a left eye called shot. The gun shoots better than I can shoot it.

I've got a 280AI, Stolle Grizzly II action, 31" Broughton with canted rifling, in a Carl Bernosky laminated prone stock. I shoot 180gr JLK VLD's(BC of .735), loaded .020" into the lands, Tungsten Disulphide coated(WS2), Norma brass,210M's, IMR7828SSC. Im getting 2950fps, 1/4MOA @ 200yds. I've only shot it at 600yds with a scope. The only problem I've had is I kept hitting the spotter pin, blowing big holes in the target, and having to wait for a target repair. Not really a complaint, just takes me out of my rhythm, and at Malabar the wind can change a lot in a few minutes, and I'm really not that good at reading changing conditions, sometimes.( got a bunch of 199's to prove it :o) That's why I built a wind bucking rifle in the first place. :P

JLKs do not have a bc of .735 ,and yes I have shot lots of them!

I suppose i should have said "claimed" BC of .735. That was, and still is the number on the JLK website. I am not aware of any other numbers published. Did someone do a independent test that showed something else? Just curious.

I had to push them jlks 70 fps faster to meet a 180hyb at 1000yards

180 bregers 2930fps
180 jlk 3000fps = the same impact point at 1000 yards

both shoot very well

I've got 180VLDs from both Berger & JLK, and have had very good results at 1000 with both brands. Been too long since I did a head-to-head comparison with the two to recall if one had an advantage over the other as far as drop at distance, but IIRC, any differences between the two were pretty small. I'd buy a supply of whichever of the two brands I could get my hands on if I were still shooting them in competition.

Well, I got time today to try N-165 and 180gr bullets

180gr Matrix
cci br2
N-165 60.3gr 2890 fps average es 3.45 sd 1.41 for 5 rounds 1.30" group @ 500yards
seat to 3.850

still a little slow for me,but would shoot in a comp. NO pressure in 31" barrel 1-8
Will try to speed up when I got time.

Also 59gr N-160 old lot 10-12years old
162 amax
fed 210m
crush fit in the lands = 3110fps and yes this warmish. Was trying this to fire form new brass.

kev77 - Your velocity doesn't sound a bit slow to me. I've read so many posts here & on other sites of guys running 2900+fps with 180s out of 284s & 280AIs, but the only way I can get that velocity out of any of my 30" bbls is by using RL17. Most of the loads I run with H4831 or 4831SC with 180 VLDs or Hybrids - in either 284 or 280 AI - will make it to 2750 before showing pressure. I've got three chronographs - an old Ohler M33, and CED M1 & M2 models, and several different 1-9tw 7mm bbls, including Bartlein 4gr & 5R, Krieger 4gr & 5R, and a single PacNor 3-groove with wide lands.

Kinda makes me wonder of part of the reason it's so hard to find brass today isn't because some guys are pushing loads so warm that their brass is ruined after 3-4 firings.
