280AI Magpro loaddata w 168Accubond

Please feel free to give your opinions re:

280AI
Magpro powder
168 Accubond 168lr
I'm doing a wee bit of a ladder with this. Load data is scarce.

I'm going to load 20 thou off the lands
Gonna load 58-61g in .5 increments.
Fed match primers.

I usually use H4831 with 145lrx, however, I'm thinking H4831 is too fast for 168G.

I love MagPro ... use it a lot in 300-WM and 300-PRC. Very consistent, very predictable, and meters very smoothly through my powder dispenser.

I’ve had excellent luck in .270 Win with Magpro and 140 gr Berger VLD Hunters. If the IMR 7828 doesn’t give me the velocities I want with 160 gr Sierras GK in my .280 Rem, I’m giving Magpro a go in it next.

Nosler has load data for the 280AI.

I don’t know why you would think H4831 was too fast for that bullet weight. Nosler doesn’t list a load for H4831 at 168 but they do for the 160s and the 175s. They also list loads with H4350 and IMR 4831 for the 168s, both faster powders than H4831.

I am close to getting a good load with Staball and 168SMKs. Again faster powder than H4831. Doing jump test with VLDs this weekend with H4350. For the heavier bullets I’m using IMR 7828.

That’s good to know it is fairly versatile in different calibers I tried it once in a 6.5 x 2image.jpg84 Norma it pressured up kind of quickly and was not getting the velocity I was getting with RL 23

I am shooting 56g of IMR 7828 in formed PMC 30/06 brass, and the Federal 210 primer sucked the bullets in a ragged hole using 175g Nosler Long range accubond. I have not checked the speed.

The 175's were darn easy to tune, and I seated them just off the lands, can not remember how far, but they were very close, .003-.010. The Federal primers shocked me in how small the groups were compared to Win, 215's, and CCI 200 & 250.

I have heard that the 168g LRAB are very, very accurate seated close to the lands, also.

I also formed brass from Lapua '06 brass, shot the same load. 14.6g of bullseye, cream of wheat, tuft of blue paper towel, gives you a 97% formed case. Clean the barrel every 25 rounds and cool the barrel. Check the inside of the shoulder with a bent paper clip for Cream of wheat that stays in the case.

When using '06 brass, the neck will be short. and carbon will accumulate in the neck. So, use a bronze bristle pistol brush with a tad bit of your favorite solvent on it, and give the brush about half a dozen spins by hand in the neck. All the carbon will be gone.

The 150g LRAB were a POS to tune, gave all I had to my brother. The 175's LRAB just shot well, right out of the gate.

Concerning the Nosler long range accubonds, sort them by ogive length. The lengths do not vary much, but you will find a bug hole load within a certain distance from the lands, maintain that bullet jump.

Concerning the std 280 Rem, in the Nosler manual #4 there is a load with IMR 7828 with Fed primers, shooting the 160g bullet at 2930 fps in a 24" barrel.

In the Rem 700's I have had over the years, the load data above is spot on.

I was playing with a NEW 280 AI, 168g VLDH, Fed 210, FIRE FORMING LAPUA CASES

Two three shot groups-cool barrel inbetween

When I changed out to IMR 7828 with the 175g LRAB, FORMED Lapua brass, all bullets touched in a group that measured in the 3's. My rifle is a 27", #5 taper, Rem 700 in a laminated stock.

I was able to shoot yesterday. All 168 Accubond LRX seated @ .020, 1/8 twist.
Magpro @ 62.5g is getting 2854 fps. 63g was 2862fps
7828ssc @ 59g was 2895fps and 59.5g was @ 2953fps (pressure signs)

I'm very good with 2850fps and clearly I found a node @ 62.5g and 63g of Magpro. I just loaded .010, .020 and .030 and will shoot again tomorrow for consistency/accuracy.

I didn't even try the H4831 due to the 7828 showing pressure. Having said that the H4831 shoots sub .5 groups with the Barnes 145 lrx @ 2937fps w 60.5g. I'm liking the BC and extended range of the 168ABLR even though Ive never shot an Elk past 200 yards.

Just an observation about the ABLR. Ive never shot this round before and am very impressed with the accuracy during the powder ladder. ALL the rounds landed within 1.2" from 58g to 63g. no flyers. Also, on my concentricity guage they seat very very consistently @ aboutish a thou.

Now, if I can only use the 19 points for Elk in Utah this year :)

It has taken some work and I’m still doing development. I ran 7828 up to 61 grains with 180SMKs. One weekend it was great, the next weekend 3 pierced primers. Finally settled on 58.0 and got this:

I am working on some VLDs. I decided to try jump test before powder development. Very interesting with a mild 55gr load of 7828:

Looks like the Mag Pro and the 168's are just fantastic, to say the least. I just do not have any at the moment.
