280 Remington for Long Range

I was wondering if anyone had tried a 280 AI as with 30: barrel, 9 twist and 180 Bergers for 1000yd shooting.
Wouldn't this be a good combination?

My brother has used a std. 280 with 30" bbl and 180 Bergers for several years now at 1000 yds. That big bullet certainly has an advantage when the wind blows.

It does recoil though and you have to deal with that.

Otherwise, good LR cartridge.

There are some real good advantages to this cartridge for shooting Prone or Fclass Long Range matches.
1. There are alot of unwanted Long Action Winchester, Remington, Savage actions in just about every Pawn shop in the USA. Since the Short Mag craze came along they seem to be poping up all over. Or at least Im noticing it.
2. Plenty of capacity in the case to push a 162- 168gr match bullet to 2900fps with a 30" barrel. Maybe even the 180's at that speed from an AI and long barrel.
3. Brass should be easy to find. even Norma.
4. Die's are no problem, Redding RCBS, Hornady, Lee, your choice.
5. Ive found it plenty accurate, even for Prone or F class matches.

I shoot a 6.5X284 for Prone Long Range. My next choice would be the 280AI since I have a reamer and Dies already from my Long Range Hunting rifle. Would be a easy transition for me.

I have a 7X64 Brenneke I sometimes use in F-Class which is very similar in length and capacity to the 280 Rem. and it feeds single shot and ejects the empties easily through a short action as well. It pushes the 180 Berger VLDs to 2900 fps very comfortably through a 31 inch 1:9 Broughton 5C. I also have a friend who shots the 189 Cauterucios with the 280 Rem at about 2800fps from a 31 inch 1:9 Krieger. I see no reason why the 280 or 280AI shouldn't work for you.

That is pretty much the combination that was used to win the Wimbledon Cup although the barrel was 28" on that rifle.
