280 Remington and Hornady ELDX

After hunting around for a couple years I finally picked up an older 700 in 280 rem. at the Tulsa gun show. I’m anxious to work up a load for it and was wondering if anyone has any experience with the 150 or 162 eldx, if so whats your favorite load?

I've run Alliant RL19, PP4000MR, RL22, RL23, Norma MRP, Ramshot Hunter, IMR 4831with the 150gr ELDX in my Ruger 77 MKII.

Fastest was PP4000MR, with decent accuracy.

RL23 gave good speed & accuracy, but the recoil was kinda harsh.

Really liking RL22 and Norma MRP.

I’ve worked up a load with the 150 ELD-X’s in my .280 Rem last year. I think I used H4831SC, but will confirm tonight when I get home.

RL22 and H4831 work really well in my KS 700. Shouldn't have to look much further than those 2 powders for 140-160s. They provide both great velocity and accuracy.

I know it's VERY difficult to come by, but RL26 in the 280 Remington with 162 ELDX is the way to go. Not going to quote loads or velocities. The real world results would scare the internet and cause the pressure police to clutch their pearls. The combination of RL26 and the Hornady 162 ELDX in a 280 Remington case is about the closest thing I have seen to a perfect match.

Haven't actually tried them in the 280 Rem just yet, but I would think VV N560 or N565 would be pretty close in performance to RL26. Might be worthwhile alternatives that are both less expensive and easier to obtain than RL26.

Heavier bullets by shot mine since 2009 for NRA LRP H1000 with 175SMK or 180 Hybs getting 2920fps with no pressure signs.

Does anyone have any terminal ballistic info on the ELDX to share? How does it perform on game?

Good. About like a ballistic tip. Not sure about 280 but in the AI version R26 is 100 fps faster than H4831 or any other powder I’ve tried.

They work ok on whitetails here in Wisconsin, they usually run about 20 or 30 yards before they pile up. They also seem to exit on a weird angle. I have recovered every deer though, and have shot about 10 deer between 100 and 650 yards 300 wsm . Accuracy wise they are incredible.
A good friend tried them on an elk and it was a disaster, it seems like the bullet doesn’t penetrate properly. 300 nmi at various ranges

I agree with you on the accuracy. Penetration for me has been lacking in my 260 Rem.

I have not been the Tulsa gun shows in 25 years!!! Loved those shows with the 2500 tables on two floors!!! Is it still at the convention center with the really Big Cowboy Statue out front?????

Can you give a little more detail on this? I'm planning on using the 150gr 284s in my 7x57 this upcoming fall.
I need to correct my post. The ELDX failure I have experienced has been with the 260 Remington, not the 7x57. in 7x57 I have not tried the ELDX ; have had excellent results with the Nosler 160 gr Partition & the discontinued Hornady AMAX, which I stocked up on. Also real good accuracy with the 150 gr Accubond but have not shot any game with it yet.
