280 Rem from 270 Win brass?

Possible to fireform 270 Winchester brass, after necking up, to 280 Remington?

New 280 barrel on the way, 280 dies in hand, but no 280 brass.

You would have to check 280 brass oal and try necking a 270 up and make sure you have enough neck I can't see any other issues you could have.

Thanks Hillbilly. OAL for both parent cartridges are the same. I will lose some when I fireform.

Just curious if anybody else has had success with this before.

acloco,

You can form 280 brass from 270 cases. I have a Jarrett built 280AI that I haven't shot in over 12 years but have loaded rounds that are stamped 270 WIN on the base. I could be corrected, but I recall the 280 shoulder is about .050 forward of the 270. I believe I just necked up and jammed an intermediate IMR4350 FF load. I do recall the finished brass did end up a little bit shorter after f-forming.

If needed, I can do some more historical rediscovery for you. I also think I still have a a bunch of new Remington 280 unprimed brass.

But 280 brass shouldbe readily available --- I finally settled on Norma.

You are right Tooter. If Acloco simply necks .270W brass up, it will have considerable excess headspace. Remington moved the shoulder forward so that the .280 couldn't chamber in a .270 rifle with all that entailed vis a vis excessive pressures due to the 0.007" oversize bullet - a small enough difference in the neck OD / bullet diameters to possibly allow the larger calibre cartridge to chamber, but big enough to cause a large pressure spike.

It's likely that a case simply necked up wouldn't actually fire with the amount of headspace involved, the firing pin using its travel to push the cartridge forward in the chamber. If it did fire, there would be a gap between the case-head and bolt-face on ignition and some of the resulting fireforming would occur in the form of case-body stretch just ahead of the solid web weakening the case and risking separation.

The proper way to re-form either a .30-06 or .270W case to .280R is to create a false shoulder that just allows the case to chamber with a crush fit and which holds it securely against the bolt. With the .270W that would involve expanding the neck to .30 calibre then sizing it back down with a .280R die that had been backed off in the press.

I used to resize 270 and 30-06 for a 25-06 I had. No problems were noted in doing this, but I did notice that case capacity was quite different between the 06 and 270, with the 270 having less capacity. I believe that 270 has thicker walls. Be careful when laoding hot loads.

I soft seat the bullets long and feed them manually. When you close the bolt the cartridge is driven back into the bolt head by the bullet pushing back. The only draw back is extracting a live round as the bullet stays in and dumps powder into the action. You have to size the neck with very light neck wall tension though, this is key to soft seating.Dont shoot lazer hot loads either as it is not necessary to form the cartidge in this manner.

The 280 shoulder is moved forward compared to the 270 or 30-06. You need a false shoulder to hold the case to the bolt or you are causing excess headspace.
