.280 Build

I have a long action Mod 70 coming and want to do a build with it. The .280 un-ackleyed is what I am thinking of. Longest distance would be 600 yds. The barrel will be a Douglas #7 contour finishing at 22". Keeping it kind of short for handling and balance. What bullet weights should I be looking at and what twist rate?

9 twist will work up to 175 gr, I have a 280, excellent caliber.

280 is a great round to shoot. 1 in 9 is what I have and I shoot 120 gr. Nos. BT with 58gr IMR 4350. I get good results. My 280 is a hunting rifle and I have had it for over 20 years and never fired a second shot at a deer. 1 shot 1 kill . I really love mine and I am sure you will feel the same. Good Luck. Rus

You would do very well with the 162 amax or the 168vld or the new 168 long range accubond and a 1-9" twist barrel would be perfect for all of them. I would step up to at least a 24" or 26" barrel though. You will not really notice the two extra inches but your bullet velocity will be helped greatly. Also with the longer barrel and the bullets I listed you should have no problem reaching out to 1000 with the 280. Just my two cents.
