280 Ackley

Has anyone worked up loads for the 280 Ackley shooting 145 gr Barnes LRX bullets using Accurate 2700 and VV-550 powders? These are the only powders I haven't tried yet and cant find anything on them in manufacturers or other reloading manuals.

all my success was with 4350, 4831 h or imr
Rl 22 and others did not produce the results of these two above.

AA2700 is a faster burning powder, but looking at Hodgdons burn chart, it is right next to IMR4350 so they should be similar at start points. As a reference, here is a load from the same manual for the 150gr Barnes TSX. There is no listing for a 145gr. (24" barrel with 9 twist):

IMR4350
Start- 51gr 2746fps @52,600psi
Max- 54.5gr 2893fps @60,100psi

Should give you some idea at least.

I'm not so sure. 4350 is a single base powder and 2700 is a double base. Don't that mean you use less of the double base?

You could call them and ask. I highly doubt your going to be pushing dangerous pressure limits with starting load of 51gr though. You have a chronograph?

The 280AI really works its magic with 140 NAB & VV N165. 3200+ is very doable from a 24 3/4" tube. Pressure is nill. Brass life is forever. Accuracy is superb. This is a tried and true load developed by a gentleman from Memphis,TN. Also believe he is a member here. And Jim Borden speaks highly of this load as well.

i have 2 280AI, both 700 trued, 26" hart, high tech stks etc. both

R/p brass 9 1/2 H4350 58.5gr and 140 Nosler bt or Sierra sbt both shoot into the .300's at 3140fps -- pressure in these rifles is modest, brass last forever, and even though higher loads easily topped 3200fps, they were in the .400's so settled on this load.

h4831 was also equal to this .

The N165 will get you the extra velocity and the tiny little groups. But 4831 certainly isnt a powder to scoff at in the 280AI
