28 Nosler, what follower are you using?

I just finished up a 28 Nosler on a Defiance deviant hunter and the LAUM follower isn't working out. The long case and 180 berger seated out to the lands is too much when you try to load the last round from the box magazine into the chamber. It's getting locked up between the feed lips on the action and the bullet hitting in the chamber. Are you guys using flat followers?

This is the follower I have in it right now:

Thanks, Casey

Hey Casey, thanks for the "Heads UP". I have a Deviant 28 Nosler to finish up next week, I'll let you know when I learn something.

I'd say it's not the follower,,,,, you've got feed rail/ramp work to do. Feed issues are hard for me to diagnose without having the rifle in hand, so that's just an educated guess. What mag box do you have installed? Not that it matters at this point,, 'cause you're the only one who can observe the 'feed cycle'. It can/will amount to real gunsmith work, not just some 'drop-in' changes of parts. And, if you haven't got it feeding reliably, you haven't "finished up".

Not sure how much longer the 180s are but I'm using the same follower with 168s at plus .010 in a Stiller long action with factory Remington box, spring and Hawkins bottom metal. All rounds feed smooth. Like shortgrass posted, there must be something else going on.

On another note, I think you'll really like the 28. :)

Yes, i believe it to be a feed rail issue, but I wanted to make sure that the follower I choose was what others have used before I started machining on the feed rails. The mag box I used is a Wyatts ext box mag (brownells no. 100-000-148). I tried like heck to change the original post to correct the status error of the rifle from "finished up" to "still being worked on" but as it turns out after 48 hrs you can't change anything, so I will have to live with my error.

hog patrol, what action are you using?

If it is sticking between the feed lips they need to be opened up. All the 28 Noslers I have built have fed flawlessly with ultramag feed lips and the ultramag wyatts box, followers have been everything from PTG to factory remington.

Thanks Alex, you where actually one guy I was thinking of that would have first hand experience cause of the one you just had posted on here a few months back. Anyways I just finished re-machining the feed lips and it is now feeding great.

Thanks Shortgrass and Alex for the help.

I have used the wyatts centerfeed boxes for most of them with the flat followers. They feed flawlessly as well. By the end of this month I will have built around 25-30 28 noslers this year so far. They have all shot the same load lights out. RE33 pushing 195s 3085-3140 fps with no pressure signs.

That was my first thought when I originally started the post Ryan, thinking that would be the answer I would get. Where are you buying your flat followers from if you don't mind me asking?

Ryan, Are you using the CFE-13 Wyatt mag box?

Wyatts MBE-3 mag box. Also guys should try out Vihtavouri 570. Ive had a few customers try it with great success. Its a lot cleaner than RE 33. RE33 will require you to clean the barrel every 30-50 rounds due to carbon buildup. 570 is way cleaner, has the same speed and is just as accurate. I had a customer tell me a few days ago 570 got him a 3/4" group at 400 yards in his 28 nosler I did for him. 195 berger @3150 fps.

Ryan, I've got a 700 in 28 that I just got back from machining the action for mbe3. I put it in and have feed issues with the rounds hanging until the last inch and a half of mag. It was a 300 win action before this new life. Do I have to file the lips down to allow the round to pop out of rails earlier

Old thread but on a 28 Nosler, built with a Kelbly's tactical action, I used an H.S. Precision detachable magazine and bottom metal. Feeds flawlessly.
