28 Nosler on a 700. Does it need to be an Ultra Mag action?

Ive got a buddy asking about putting together a 28 on a 700 I found several posts on what magazine to use but didnt see if folks were starting with a reg magnum action or an Ultra.
If its the ultra how hard is it to open the feed rails on a regular mag to the ultra.( it may be cost effective to do/have done) I believe i read the ultra rails are .012 wider each side. Much research would be done before that.
Thanks much

it really does need to be an ultramag. I haven't tried a regular magnum but I built a 33nosler in a hurry this year for myself on a 30-06 action and the case wont even drop thru the rails. its a single shot anyway with a follower but I was just checkin

I’ve built a few 28noslers on regular rem 700 magnum actions. One was a 300wm and 7mag to start. The feed rails only had to be opened a little bit. I used a fine file and layout fluid to remove material until the case barely slipped through at the base. I didn’t have to take much material off the front of the rails mainly the rear. Once the case fit through the rails I cleaned them up with a fine polishing stone and broke the edges so they wouldn’t scratch the cases.

I reused the regular magnum followers but did have to purchase the “ultra mag” mag boxes from midway USA they are $10.

If your reamer has longer FB then you can install a Wyatt’s box and adjust the feed rails the same way.

Did the same thing on a Rem 700 7mm rem mag. Works fine!

The feed rails and the feed ramp itself need to be opened up. The wyatts center feed cfe 12 box will feed the best.
