270wsm

has anyone been shooting a 270wsm for prairie dogs? my friend has a new savage heavy barrel coming and was looking for a good starting point. thank you. cliffe

cliffe, I tried a few of the 110 gr. V-max and my Browning A-bolt was shooting less than MOA at 100 yds. I did not try it at long range. I have the load data if you want it. Bill

EDIT: My load was Rem Brass, 61.0 gr. H-414, 215 Fed. GM primer, 110 gr. V-max. Hornady .010 off the lands

Cliff, I am using a 300 WSM called a 300 Varminter. The 300 Varminter is designed around a Bartlien 30", 1-15 twist, barrel to shoot the 110grn V-Max and 125grn BT. I will be using the 110grn V-Max for shots out to 600 yards and for shots past 600 yards and out to 800 yards, I will use the 125grn BT.

For the 270 WSM, I would try the 110grn V-Max or the 130grn Ballistic tip. These bullets should work fine out of your friends 270 WSM.

For powder, I would try H4350, VV-N160 and Reloader 19. Start out with 60grns with each of the powders listed and work your way up. I would also use Norma Brass. The Norma brass will handle higher pressures much better than other brass.

You should see what the 110grn V-Max's does out of the 300 Varminter,Tightneck .337 Neck 300 WSM). Richard Franklin pushes them at 4100fps and it is absolutely devestating on groundhogs, even at 600 yards.

I bet the 110grn V-Max, out of the 270 WSM, would be awesome too. It wont push them as fast as the 300 Varminter, but I am guessing they could still be pushed to around 3450fps or faster.
