270 wsm real world velocity?

Out of a 26-28" barrel what would realistic expectations be for 110, 130 and 150grn bullets?

Obviously many other variables, just trying to get some idea of what this round really does. Published data varies quite a bit. Thank, matt.

Working up loads in my new Rem 700 SPS .270 WSM 24 inch barrel has so far produced the following velocities with comfortable bolt lift:

110 3400 fps IMR 4350
130 3150 IMR 4831
140 3050 RL22

Going up another 100 fps in all weights starts to give hard bolt lift and shiny headstamps on the case.

Winchester Super X 150 gr factory loads give 3090 fps with easy bolt lift but I suspect they might contain the new proprietary powders that give higher velocity with lower pressure.

One big factor I have noticed so far in the .270 WSM is the very different points of impact for the various bullets. Setting the 130 gr Speer spbt as the standard at 3 inches high at 100 metres which gives 3 inches high at 200 metrres, very accurate.

This puts the 110 Sierra sp 6 inches high at 100 and 9 inches high at 200. The 130 Nosler AccuBond prints just as high as the 110 Sierra but 2 inches to the right at 100 and 4 inches to the right at 200. Both bullets still very accurate.

The 130 Hornady SST prints one inch higher than the 130 Speer but 3 inches to the left at 100 and 6 inches to the left at 200.

This compares to my Tikka 6.5x55 which puts all bullets weights and makes pretty well into the same point of impact at 100 metres.

I have a factory 700 with a 24" barrel and the first bullet that I tried was the Accubond 140 and it was shooting consistent 3/4 moa groups. Since this was a hunting rifle I didn't try anything else and was plenty accurate for my needs. I was getting 3150 fps with 60.3 grs. of Imr 4350. I would get about 4 reloadings from the brass before the primer pockets opened up to much. I wasn't getting any of the normal pressure signs. I backed down to 60.0 grs and now I'm getting more reloading from the brass (don't know how many more yet) and I'm still getting around 3120 fps.

Matt, I don't think your going to find many factory 270WSM with 26" or 28" barrels. Are you going to build or buy a factory chamber rifle?

In Tikka T3 with 150gr NBTs and Speer 150 gr SP give 3150 fps with a healthy dose of MagPro. Shoots constant enough to bust pill bottles out to 550 yards.

I'm currently shooting 110 accubonds right at 3,515 fps with reloader 19, deer don't like it so much ;D. Factory 140 Accubonds shot 3050, I've pushed some 140's 3150, and some 130's 3250. Accuracy is generally better around 3000-3100 with the 130 and 140's. The 110's both v-max's and accubonds love to go fast and are very accurate. I shoot a 24'' barrel remington 700.

I pushed a 140gr SST at 3408fps one time but had to beat the bolt open with a hammer...No fun and pretty dang scary..

Looking at options for the next build. Was thinking a .270wsm for long range varminting and informal bench shooting. I really like the .270 win hunting rifle I have now, and the wsm gives just enough more velocity to make it a contender. Would use a 26-28 barrel.

At the moment this has been sidetracked by an old bolt action 30-30 that followed me home from the local gun shop.
