.270 wsm range report

Just bought a Rem 700 SPS in .270 WSM. A Toronto store had a hunting season sale, no sales taxes, 10% discount with in-store club card and Rem has a mail-in rebate for the SPS. It`s like they were paying me to take it away.

Had a Bushnell 4-12 in a drawer so put that on to get started. Mounted the Bushnell on the new Weaver extended picatinny tactical base, part #99500, to get the ocular bell as far forward as possible from my eye while working up loads off a bench. Weighs 8 1/4 lbs all up.

Bought a box of Win Super X 150 gr for sighting in and to get some brass for reloading. They chronod at 3060 fps and put 3 in one inch at 100 metres (110 yds), not bad for cheap hunting loads. Sighted for 2.5 inch high at 100 which put them 2.5 inch high at 200 and 5 inch low at 300 metres (330 yds).

The Win SX factory loads have varying neck tensions and grip the bullet mainly by the crimp. Wanted to see the effect of pulling the bullets, sizing the neck, deburring the neck and reseating the bullet over the original factory powder charge which is 69.5 gr of a ball powder.

Ordered some Sinclair bushings for a .300 WSM neck bushing die that I had. Used the .304 bushing to size the necks and reseated the bullets to original factory length.

Got the group at 100 metres shown below, three in 5/8 inch on a very windy day. Now it is on to working up loads for 130 and 140 gr Speers and Hornadys.

1000 yard stare, you have one nice rifle that is kicking butt out of the box. I had a Savage Weather Warrior I bought new about 4 years ago in .270WSM with accutrigger that shot lites out. Dumb butt me sold it, but to make a long story short, I was loading 65 grains of RL-22 under Nosler 130 Accubonds to mag length and was very happy with it.

Been working more with my new Rem 700 SPS in .270 WSM. Impressed with two parameters compared to other 700s I have owned.

a) Seated to .020 off the lands, the cartridge actually fits into the magazine. No ginormous long throat.

b) Looking at the wear marks on the rear bearing surfaces of the bolt`s locking lugs, they appear to have almost 100% contact with the locking recesses in the action. Probably one reason the rifle is so accurate early on.

Don`t like the sloppy firing pin hole in the bolt face but I am not going to bush a hunting rifle.

I do like the trigger despite recent high profile commentary concerning M700 triggers. I have owned a dozen Rem 722 and 700 rifles over the past 50 years and have had no trouble with their triggers. If the rear sear engagement screw has not been tampered with then a malfunction is probably due to dirt accumulating in the trigger housing.

Went out to the 300 metre range today with 130 gr Speer spbt loads. Once fired Win .270 WSM brass trimmed to 2.095. Settled on 69 gr RL22, Win primer, .304 bushing in a Sinclair .300 WSM neck die. COAL 2.740. Chronos at 3250 fps. Am ordering a Sinclair .270 WSM f/l bushing die.

Prints 2 1/2 inch high at 100 metres, 2 1/2 high at 200 and 4 1/2 low at 300. Got the 1 5/16 inch (0.5 moa) group below at 200 metres (220 yds).
