270 Winchester Varmint loads

Good afternoon all! First post here in a while, was here under different username years back. I'll get to the point.

Picked up a Savage 110, laminate thumbhole stock, chambered in 270 win with about a 21" 10tw barrel. Outwardly appearing doesn't appear to have been used much. Long short of it I want to shoot 90gr TNTs and/or 110gr Vmaxs. Have looked at Hodgdon data and was wondering what others' best bullet/powder combo has been? H4350 has been a favorite of mine in the past in other chamberings.

Appreciate the discussion and insight!

Mike

My old 270 shot 90 gr sierras into 5 shot cloverleaf groups @ 200 yards. I tried Varget and I4064 before settling on H4350 in the mid range of Hodgdon's load data. Ran about 3430 fps out of a 22" barrel. Unfortunately the only place to get the discontinued Sierra 90s today is eBay. However, I do believe The TNTs should shoot about the same.

I witnessed a groundhog get shot with a 270 and a 90 gr Sierra at 200 yards way back in the late 70's. There was nothing but skin from chin to butt, and the rest was sprayed in a gory green triangle of goo all over the weeds behind him. Heck of an impression that left!

Greatly appreciate the replies. Looks like I'm going to get some 90gr Speer TNTs coming and see what I have for powder? I reluctantly admit it has been quite some time since my hand has grasped the lever on my press.

Thanks again

Mike

I second the recommendation for AA4064. I shoot the Speer 100gr HP in my .270 and it’s a great combination for accuracy and velocity.

My 1980 Model 70A absolutely LOVED Speer 100gr HP seated to cam/jam over 48.5gr of IMR 4895.
Shot way better than I could shoot it, even with a fairly lightweight sporter barrel.
Took it deer hunting one year and grabbed wrong ammo, but that load also was a 1-shot deer killer.

I've often thought about using the lighter bullets in .270 Win. for deer. Jack O'Connor wrote years ago of how quickly they kill.
Mine is also a Model 70.

You have to root around to find them, run a Want To Buy. I think that they are discontinued, hence my choice in the 110g V max, and the load also works for the 110g Sierra spt, and the Barnes 110g TTSX.
