270 Winchester Hunting loads

Hey Folks,

I'm fixin to start developing some hunting loads for my buddy's Tikka in 270 Win. I shoot a 270 WSM, and havn't loaded for a straight 270 before. Because of the temperature change that will take place between now and Thanksgiving, I was considering using either H4350 or H4831sc, since I keep both on hand, and they are supposed to be less sensitive to temp swings. He really likes the 130 grain Remington AccuTips, so the bullet is decided on. My only real question is for primer. Do any of you 270 hunters use magnum primers for the cold weather, or will standard large rifle suffice? I have Winchester LRs, Remington 9 1/2s, and CCI magnums,250s I believe), and was planning on using the Remington 9 1/2. I'm just curious as to what gives the best results during Rifle Season from folks with 270 experience.

I load Imr 4350 in both 130 and 150's 55gr for the 130 Sierra SBT and 52gr for the Nos 150 part or Sierra sbt.

both shoot <1/2' at 100 from Rem 700 bdl bedded and free floated. 22' bbl the 130 clock 2950 and the 150 2810.

I use H4831SC in my 270 and light them with regular old Winchester large rifle primers. Have only hunted down to about 30º but have had no trouble.

I forgot to add i use 9 1/2 on all loads, no problems between Ga temp and Wy temp.

Work up to it but 60 grs H4831 and a 130 gr bullet has shot in about every 270 Win I have ever seen. I use CCI BR2 primers. Most manuals don't call for that much powder now days but a few years back that is the load that was listed right on the H4831 can for the 270 Win and 130's. I have never shot it in below freezing weather. I deer hunt in East NC and most of the time you need to worry about heat stroke instead of freezing to death. :lol:

I'm not a .270 Winnie Pooh Guru YET, BUT I'd relegate it to 150 grain Barnes Triple-X for Really BIG Deer and Elk. Love .243 Winnie Pooh loads, and experiment-away many summery weekdays to fulfill its destiny as a Mule Deer Killer. Thus Far, 100 Grain Speer Grand Slams favor the properly prepared, whilst 90 grain Swift Scirocco IIs favor the Pronghorn hunter. I plan to purchase a .270 Winchester caliber rifle SOON, then the fur will fly beyond a .243's current, powerful potential,2200 ft/lbs of muzzle energy). Barnes bullets have totally caught my attention, so experimentation continues. Just when I think I have the ultimate load, a new bullet offering appears requiring my attention. Cliffy
