.270 Win suppressed for Hunting Rifle?

so my father-in-law hunts with a .270 win. he asked me today if there are suppressors that will allow him to hunt/shoot much quieter. i said im sure there are but im not familiar. can anyone tell me if this is real, or a good/bad idea? ive read a little and seems a suppressed .270 does give you a lot of power when it comes to knock down energy. anyone wanna comment, feel free.

I'm not sure what you mean by "Is this real" but yes, suppressing a 270 would be no problem at all.

There are so many suppressor options these days, my personal favorites are Thunderbeast. For pure quite, take a look at the Ultra 7 or something similar.

Running a suppressor on a .270 Win is not a problem at all. In fact, not only will your father-in-law appreciate the sound reduction, but anyone shooting near him when visiting the range will appreciate his investment in a suppressor as well. And like @Hoodoo said, there's hundreds of different males and models out there. My personal favorite is my Dead Air Nomax 33 I run on my 300 Win Mag, but I also use the Silencerco Omega 300, as well as the Hybrid 46.

Keep in mind for a deer hunt you may end up making just one shot (or perhaps two), over a weekend.

A suppressor still costs many hundreds of dollars.

Your father can carry this lightweight hearing protector band around his neck and insert it in 3-4 seconds when he's ready to shoot the deer or elk. It's $4.99 at Amazon with 25dB Noise Reduction Ratio.

Yes, a suppressor on his 270 will make it not only be much quieter, but also reduce recoil.

The downside to getting into the suppressor world is getting the barrel threaded (if not already threaded) and the added weight and length of the suppressor to the rifle. If his 270 has a 24" barrel, even the shortest suppressors are going to add 6" of length. He would be hunting with a 30" barrel when suppressed. Maybe the length isn't a big deal when hunting in a blind, but not so great on a mountain or still hunting rifle.

All that said, the rifles I hunt/shoot suppressed, I've had the barrels shortened to 20" or less. Shortest is a 6.5 CM and .223 that have a 17" barrels which equals 23" suppressed. The balance of the rifles is much better after shortening the barrel and adding the suppressor. I use a Silencerco Omega that is 6" long. My barrels needed threaded anyway to accept the suppressor, so cutting off a few inches of barrel wasn't a problem. I'll gladly trade a few inches of barrel and a loss in velocity to make it a better hunting /packing rifle. The one cartridge I use regularly and didn't suppress is my .270 Win.

I truly enjoy shooting suppressed, but I won't go as far to say that its the best for every cartridge or rifle configuration.

I bought a lathe about 25 years ago so I could thread barrels. After I got my first can I was hooked. I threaded a couple of my AR's, my 700 police in 308, 700 police in 223, and a 22-250. I was going to thread everything I had, but it dawned on me that where I hunt, several miles and few thousand vertical feet higher than the truck, that carrying a extra 3/4 of a pound was not worth it for 1 maybe 2 shots. As a result not one of my hunting rifles is threaded. It just seems wrong to take a high velocity round like 264 Win Mag and run it in a 18 or 20" barrel.

For stand hunting, sure, or coyote hunting where I may have more than one animal to shoot at a stand, the can makes sense. I still run them on 24 and 26" barrels, shortest is my 17-223 at 20".

Curious what lathe did you get and did you teach yourself how to do the barrel threading? I’ve been wanting to do this myself for sometime but feel a bit overwhelmed about the learning curve

I had a very basic understanding of running the lathe from a junior high shop class. I also have a friend who is a machinist.
I had a Leblonde 14x54. Nice lathe, but when I moved I had no place to put it and sold it to a friend.

Ditto.. I've been wanting one myself. Although I have a 23 year old son who's a machinist now who's agreed to go in halves on one of I was to get one.

Have him get the barrel cut to 18 or 20 inches and put a titanium can like a Scythe on it. It will be much more enjoyable to shoot, won’t kill what’s left of his hearing, and still be a great killing tool in the woods. Like most of you, once I got my first suppressor, I started getting all my barrels threaded. Like a few of you, I got a lathe to do it myself
