270 Win Elk Bullet

What have people had good luck with? I'm thinking of the Accubonds or something with a poly tip. Probably won't shoot past 400 yards.

I have shot elk with both the 130 and 150 Gr Hornady bullets..But I would now reload a 130 Nosler partition for elk hunting to get a bit more penetration. I recovered the bullets on the far side under the hide of the elk shot with the old Hornady bullets. I swithched to a 308 Norma Mag rifle using 165 Gr bullets, one elk, with the last two elk I shot used a 225 Gr bullet out of a 340 Weatherby Mag rifle. The elk I shot with the 270 were between 75 and 200 yards and were lung heart shots..

I us 140gr Accubonds in mine but have yet to pull the trigger on an elk with it, but my hunting partner has and it worked very well. The bull was quartering towards him and the bullet went through one shoulder and through the offside lung and exited. The elk ran 40 yards and dropped. The shot was taken at 212 laser ranged yards and the load was 58.0gr,book max) of H4831SC.

It;s not so much the weight of the bullet it's where you place your shot.when your hearts pumping 40 miles and hour. the best gun i have found for elk is the 338.

Swift A-frames or Sirocco's,TBBC's, Partitions. Inside the 400 yd line TIPs won't make a bit of difference in Hunting trajectory

I'd get a bigger gun for elk, 30-06 minimum.

Up here in Canada my brother and I have probably shot in excess of 100 big game animals over the years with the 270, deer,moose and black bears). We found the 130 grain too light even for our,large) deer.We will not use a 130 grain as it doesn't allow any error in shot placement, they'r only good for broadside shots).The 140 hornady boat tail worked like magic on deer and bear while the 150 nosler partition was great on moose, shot out to almost 600 yards)....hope this helps...

That does help. Thank you. I normally hunt with a 7 mag but it's having some issues so this is my elk gun for the time being.

In a 270WSM,150gr Nosler partitions @2850 went right through broadside at 225yds.Nice exit hole,fell within 50 yards.

Try 'Barnes xxx' and you might end up sticking with the 270!

barnes 130gr will work great at most angles.
