.270 wby mag, berger 130gr vld

The Berger reloading manual lists 62 gr H4831 Sc as a starting load. You can use H4831 at the same charge. I notice that you have a thread about crimping bullets, DO NOT crimp Berger bullets as you will ruin them. I hunt with Berger bullets in a 7mm Rem Mag and will not crimp them.

the crimper is for my sst's

I wouldn't be shooting the 130 grain SST's in the 270 mag! Many folks have had trouble with them comming apart and literally exploding going thru a cardboard target. I had the problem and called Hornaday, and the guy on the phone said they were designed for 3100fps max velocities. Thought it was just me, but it seems a lot of others have had the same problem. On one shooting board a guy was having problems with them comming apart in flight (I never did, but had some completely dissappear!). I shoot 150 grain bullets in mine, and have zero problems. I'm getting right at 3200 fps with several 150 grain bullets, but was getting a little over 3400 fps with the 130 grain SST's and a heavy load of AA3100 powder. Going to try the Nosler 160 grain bullet this summer if I get the time.

The bullets release more uniform from the case (same neck tension) most of the time from un-crimped brass. This translates into more accurate ammo. What is the brand and style of dies that you have? The dies that you have may have the crimper built into the seating die. All of the std RCBS rifle dies that I have has a crimping feature built into the seating die. You just turn the seating die down to adjust, You have to have the bullet with the crimp groove pushed down almost hidden in the case first.
