270 neck

Just posted question on gun projects site, maybe I should have asked it here. Just picked up a rem action, hart brl. from my smith. I asked him to give me a .272 neck on my 1-14 twist, so I could use lapua brass, and not turn necks, I even told him I would buy a new reamer, he said he had a good reamer and don't waste money on a new one. When I picked it up today he says it has a .270 neck, and that's what I want, and that 6br rem and 6br norma now are the same????> He also ordered me redding 6br rem dies not 6br norma. He says no problem they are the same thing???? He fired one round to test fire, and the neck is .269, it's rem 6br brass. I have Lapua brass and that's what I plan on using. Can I trust him ???

They have just recently bought a 6mBR Rem to be used with the lapua brass not what I thought I was ordering. I ordered a reamer from dave and wanted the norma chambering with enough freebore to fit 107 and I got the Rem chambering so I called and asked about it and he said they are the same now. NK size I am unsure about I know some smiths are using .271 and it seems like I read somewhere that you can use the .270 without turning necks but am unsure on that

I've got a couple of rounds of Lapua 6BR sitting in front of me with 107 Sierra's seated in them. The brass is brand new, Lapua, unturned and never been fired. Using my Mitotoyo digital micrometer, these rounds measure .27040 give or take a few 10-thou.

If your chamber has a genuine .270 neck and a fired round measures .269, I suspect you might have problems. I've never used Remington brass. Maybe it has a slightly thinner neck but who would want to use it anyway???

Thanks for the reply: I plan on using only lapua brass, that aside I guess I'm upset at the smith for not using .272 reamer. Plus 2 month wait!! Put gun together today and want to test it out, I quess I will load a couple of rounds and see what the neck measures with bullet seated. Still don't know why the smith got me 6br rem dies and not 6br norma, unless they are really the same. But smith is a cantankerous old XZX#$*! ! that said, guess I will call Redding in the AM monday and maybe they can help. Maybe I should pour some of Brownells stuff down the chamber and see what that old geezer really did. P.S. You guys are all shooting heavy stuff I will not shoot anything over 75gr. and probably 55's or maybe berger 65's max, gun is just to keep Mr. vermin from attacking, here in "Oregun" sometimes they get to be a problem!!! Thanks Ted

Make sure you dont shoot clinch river bullets--this will cut your clearances---if there are any

CR's that i have seen are about 0.0004 over bore diameter--which is no problem unless you have zero clearance like it seems you have.

be careful!

I shoot a .270 neck BR and BRX and I shave new Lapua brass...In my opinion .270 necks need Lapua brass turned....would be too close for my comfort......be careful.

It's always a good thing to check out your exact neck size, my last Pac-Nor .272 neck 6br barrel was to darn tight to be safe with out turning to .012......
