.264 Win Mag - powder suggestions?

Hi All,

I am new to reloading the .264 Win Mag and was hoping to get some powder suggestions. I’ll start off shooting Barnes 120gn TSX and TTSX bullets.

The rifle is a Winchester M70 Extreme Weather. It will be used for deer and elk hunting in the Rocky Mountains, and antelope on the plains.

TIA

I'm using Nosler 140 and 142 gr AB/ABLR in mine. Running RL33. Barrel seems to stay clean for a good while (75-100 rounds before HAVING to clean it). Velocities in the 3225-3250 range and good accuracy (.6" groups or so when I do my part)

I have had great results with Retumbo and 130 AB in my 264 Win mag. 3350 fps and under moa accuracy. The 130 AB is a great deer bulled at these speeds. You can make 264 cases by just running 7 rem mag cases into your FL size die. I use WW 7 mag cases.

Retumbo is a good solution for a single powder source but don't let that stop you from trying a couple others just in case.;) I use Re-25 because I'm in a stable temperature zone without big swings in temps. The testing I did with Re-33 matches the above velocities but leaves us about 100-150 fps short of the other powders. Remember that these powders are nearly full or completely full cases, no room for shifting powder position. I also use the 130 class bullets (better BC) especially when the antelope are edgy and the shots get longer. The Berger 130 grain VLD is super.

H-1000
MRP2
N-217 is slightly better than the MRP2
VVN-570

Enjoy the process!

For those wondering...

The Winchester M70 Extreme Weather chambered for the 264 Win.Mag has a 9" twist.

Run the data on those 140 and 142 gr bullets out of that 9 twist barrel through JBM Ballistics Stability (Sg) calculator and I’ll bet you get a surprise. Use 0.199” for length of plastic tip.

Calculator shows 1.30 SG with 140 VLD (1.400" length) at 3,000 fps in a 9" twist.
142 smk (1.380" length) at the same 3,100 fps, shows 1.39 SG.
That was using Berger's stability calculator.

Not optimal, but plenty good to stabilize and if I had a 264 WinMag with the 9" twist, I wouldn't think twice about shooting up to 140 gr bullets.

JBM’s Miller/Courtney calculator factors a few data parameters that are substantially different than Berger’s Litz calculator. I believe the JBM to be more accurate across all makes of bullets and the Berger to be formulated for Berger’s proprietorship.

I encourage you to compare and decide for yourself.

Back in the day when .264 wasn't cool yet, I ran 140 Nosler Partitions and H4831. Many an elk fell to that rifle. and still do.

I recommend the 100ttsx at max speed. That could be R17 orR26 they are both great. Even though 100ttsx is light, it is devastating. With increased speed it makes increased penetration because the bullet won't disintegrate or come apart. It also makes a bigger wound because of the higher speed. Bones won't stop them. The 100ttsx is super accurate also. This one bullet is good for all your needs, out to about 300-325 yards.
