260AI ?

No problem--as long as you are shooting single shot. You'll need about a 3 inch magazine length if you want them to feed.

You may be able to get away with using a Wyatts box, from their website;

"This box extends the O.A.L. of the ctg. approx. .110".

Outside length is 3.070". Inside length is 2.995"."

I'm using one now on a long action, pretty slick.

Have a read of the spec for this rifle. 140 A-max and 142 SMKs feed from the magazine without any issues.

After having shot a couple of rifles chambered for a 260 Imp 30* for the past couple of years, I've decided this is my favorite 6.5mm cartridge for use in short actions. I've built five 6.5x47s, and have been pretty pleased with the results, but the 260 Imp 30*'s greater case capacity gives more velocity out of 26" bbls in practical steel matches without pushing to the limits. I'm still dinking around with a new 6.5x47 on a Bighorn action, but unless further load development leads to better results, am probably going to wind up using the 260 Imp 30* reamer to re-chamber this rifle's bbl.

I use Alpha Type II's with 140 vlds in a 260 AI 40 deg and love it but it's not a Rem Short action so I cannot speak for extracting loaded rounds that long @ 2.965". I'm building the same setup on a Deviant right now and I will say I will always have a 260 AI in my arsenal. It's a beast in trajectory, feels like a juggernaut in the wind compared to other in-class cartridges and hits the steel with a lot more authority.

I took my mulie at 550 this year with mine in a 15-25 mph wind and while that wind was a bit strong I took the shot while I would not have with less potent rounds.

What is the max COAL you can extract from a Rem 700 SA?

Just checked on mine. 3.000"...but just. That's with the bolt pulled back to the stop. 2.975" should be a safe number.

Since Defiance makes a medium length action, that would seem to be the perfect length for ctdgs like the 260 - if anyone was making AICS-style magazines a little longer than the current ones. If the M700 hadn't so dadburned popular for the past 40+yrs, perhaps our rifle makers wouldn't be so stuck with the 700's limitations where action length is concerned.

260 AI // 6.5x55

I built a 260 AI on a Mod. 70 for a Prone 1000 Gun. Lot of work with brass Great shooter .

When the barrel shot out at 1900 rounds . I switched to a 6.5x55 and never looked back.
I am running a 32" R-5 1-8.5 with 142 Match Kings . I have all I can do to keep it at 2920 FPS. ( save on barrel life)
It drills holes at 1000 yards.

Don, I had a local 'smith chamber a Krieger med Palma in 6.5x55 for my Nesika K Palma rifle in 2002, and loaded N160 with S142MKs for 2912fps out of that 30" bbl. It's always been a hummer at 1000, and is still going strong, since I got into shooting Dashers in '04, and haven't put that many rounds through the 6.5 since then.

Built mine on long action Remington. Just went and measured the OAL using a 140 SST seated so the bearing surface is at the base of the neck.

3.003"

If you're going to build around a long action, you might as well go with a 6.5x55 AI instead of the 260 AI.

Please explain the benefits as you see them and Thank you
