.260 with 4831sc and 130gr Berger loads

Hi all,

I have a tikka .260 and trying to get it to shoot. Yes factory gun light barrel but this thing wont shoot remotely consistent groups. Anything from 1" to 2.5" running 4350 and 120gr nosler BTs.

I have had a look over the gun and can't find anything obviously wrong with the the setup itself and I'm very confident it's not me.

.260 IS a new calibre to me so I'm looking to try a different recipe. I have some Berger 130gr VLD hunting which should be as good a bullet as I'm going to find for accuracy and some 4831sc.

Has anyone loaded this combination or have experience with getting the best out of the .260?

I am having good luck with Scenar 136s over H4831 in my Bighorn custom 260. A charge of 43.6 grains gives me 2740 fps. A recent collection of 6 5 shot groups averaged 0.716 inches. 4350 doesn't shoot worth a darn in my rig.

Is the barrel floated and/or action bedded ?

Tikka CTR in 260. 45.8gr 4831sc, 130 AR Hybrid, Federal LR primer, Nosler brass. 2820 fps. 4350 gave better velocity but was lacking in group size.

Hey X,
I am loading for a .260 Ackley 40* shoulder. I’m using Palma brass, CCI 450’s, and H4831SC around 47grns, with 28” bbl and Berger 144 grn long range hybrid target, and achieving 2900 fps with an SD of 4 over a 40 shot string. It has replaced all my other powders for the gun. Just my honest opinion, the groups for 5 shots are .4”@100 and 10 shots at 200 are making 1.2”.

Thanks for the assistance gents. Had a gut feeling this may be fussy on powder type and some of your comments are confirming that. 4350 SHOULD be a good powder and has been perfect in other Cals for me but I'm not feeling the love in the .260!

Did a full load work up from min to .5gr over max and ended up with "best" at 44.5gr which is about mid range with a 120gr.
Mine is running 43.5 of 4350 with 130eldm at 2833fps and very good groups for a 24" factory barrel.
I also use 47.5 of 4831sc with a cci250 and 144ght at 2817fps and that SHOOTS even better .

Just got my H4831sc last week. Best so far in my gun 45.2 gr.with 127gr Barnes lrx .055” jump. Norma brass f210 primer. Around 3/4 moa. 8 twist Shaw barrel .260. Accuracy potential with this powder is good, as case fill is no problem. If I recall, I couldn’t find any specific recipes but got no pressure in my gun up to 46.5gr. Usual warnings . ( seems lrx is easy to find -try em.).

Just back from Wv anterless. 127gr. LRX in my 260 . Bullet took out 3 inch spine section, lung jellied. Quick dispatch. 45.2 H4831sc. This was my first copper bullet experience. Berger’s couldn’t do any better.
