.260 to .260 AI

I think I know the answer, but will ask anyway. I have a .260 Remington bolt gun. After doing performance research I think I will change it to a .260 AI. Question is; is the chamber shoulder moved forward only, or is it a full rebarrel, or if a rechamber, how much barrel lenght will I lose? Thanks for all responses.

Proper protocol on an Ackley chamber(rechamber) is to set the barrel back a thread or two to get a proper crush fit on factory brass. So with a re-crown included, loss in barrel length is minimal.

It is much easier to fire-form brass when you set it up with a tight fit. I set mine back a .010" and then crept in until I had the go-gage barely close. This made the brass easy to fire-form with COW method.

Accuracy is better and I gain 110+ fps. It doesn't feed as slick as the regular case but still feeds. It was worth it to me. The Lapua 260 brass is pricey but good.

personal exerience for me- it was not worth the effort. minor fps gain no accurcy gain and feeding was not as smoth.

possibly some benefit if rebbl to much longer tube but not a rechamber IMHO if re bbl, there are better choices..

I definitely saw increased velocity and accuracy. It nips at the heels of my 6.5-284. I would never build a 6.5-284 on a short action but would and did build a 260 AI on one.

40* shoulders are not for everyone. If this isn't a big concern, go for it.

Only 1/4 thread turn is necessary for the Ackleys ;)

Michael,

Wouldn'it be better to trim one full thread to keep the barrel stamps in their proper place?

Just a thought,

When you have a iron sight on the barrel you are true. It`s very tricky to get the right angular then.
But when there are no sights on the barrel 1/4 is enough. The old stamps are than below the stock line and it can be stamped with the new caliber and gunsmith logo.

But I prever to install a new barrel ;)
