260 remington twist rate advise!!

Hello everybody and thank you for reading and hopefully replying to this post.

I am planning to buy a 260 Remington with the following:
1-9 barrel twist rate
26 inch stainless steel barrel (unsure of make at the time)

I plan to use this rifle for target and the occasional hunting trip. Mainly target.

So i was mainly wondering if a 1-9 twist will stabalize 130 grain berger VLD's or will i need to change to a 123 grain Lapua Scenar or a 123/120 grain Sierra Matchking?

as a side note Berger does say on the 130 hunting VLD's that a 1/9 twist is recomended (spelling?) however i was wondering if anyone could give me hands on advice on their 130 target VLD's.

Mines a hunting 260, and I put an 22", 8 twist Rock on it.

I suggest you do the same, then you'll be golden up to the 140/142 range.

I haven't played with the bigger ones yet, been shooting the 100/120 Ballistic Tips. 100's are doing 3275, and I'm wantin' to thump a coyote with 'em. H-414's the catalyst.

On a side note, I do have a factory 26" Rem 260 VLS with their standard 9 1/4" twist, and it shoots 142 SMK's just fine.

I have a barrel with a 1-9 twist, that is chambered in 6.5X47 Lapua, which is reasonably similar to .260. I'm shooting 130 Berger VLD's. Last fall I shot it in a 1K match, everything was right on.

I use a 1-9 which stabilizes the 139 Scenar to 1,000 yards just fine, but at 2950 fps using a 6.5 X 284. You'd have to be stepping on a .260 way too hard to hit the same velocity with the same bullet.

A better option would be a 1-8.5 twist, if your maker offers the option. Bartlein for instance will cut any twist in a barrel you want. It should easily stabilize the 130s and maybe allow a little higher velocity for a given load, maybe.

If the 1-8.5 twist is not available from your maker of choice, then a 1-8 twist is fine.

Get an 8 twist and don't worry about it. My 8 twist shoots Sierra 142's very well, but now I've really messed my head up. Tried some Nosler 100 gr ballistic tips and they all went into one hole. No downside to getting an 8 twist.

I have built some 6.5's and have always used 1-8" twist as I tend to like to be able to shoot the 140's. Target shooting in the wind at mid-range you may want the option to try 140's in wind so I would reccomend a 1-8" twist.
